Have you ever stepped into the shower after someone else only to be hit with cold water?

Most people would be annoyed if all the hot water was used up—but this man is purposely keeping the hot tap off.

Matt D’Avella challenged himself to take a cold shower for 30 days.

Matt isn’t the average person; he is a YouTube creator who looks to push himself out of his comfort zone. And that is why he gets under ice-cold water every day for a month.

In the video, Matt talks about how each day varies. Some days are more difficult than others, but it does get easier. He emphasizes that every day, the choice to get under the cold water is intentional.

On his YouTube channel, D’Avella focuses a lot on life elements that people can choose to work on, to change and make better.

In the intro to the cold shower video, Matt mentions Wim Hof, a Dutch athlete who has developed a breathing technique with a cold water immersion component.

His method, known as Wim Hof-ing, has gained popularity in recent years. With proper guidance, anyone can do it.

Many professional athletes seem to be following closely along Wim’s path!

One advocate of the method is big wave surfer Laird Hamilton, who believes there is no single person who could not benefit from this type of breathwork.

He even has a testimonial on Wim Hof’s YouTube page, and his enthusiasm for the method is evident across all his platforms.

But you don’t need to chase big waves or even be an athlete to learn how to breathe.

And at its core, Wim Hoffing is just that: breathing. It is intentional inhales and exhales, and when done correctly, it can have many benefits for both the mind and body.

But who is the man behind it all, and why should anyone trust him?

According to his website:

“Wim has run a half marathon above the Article Circle and climbed Mount Everest only in shorts. And yes, that means barefoot. He has run a full marathon through the Namibian Desert without water. Among many ice-related achievements, Wim Hof has swum 66 meters under ice.”

Watching him do this is enough to take your breath away, but Wim is entirely in control in scenarios when anyone else would be defenseless.

It sounds out of this world, we know—but even if it all seems like smoke and mirrors, Hof’s old experiments are backed by science, and the only thing he is seeking is the recognition that his method works.

Some people have tried to disprove his methods, but in the end, he has kept converting any new people to believe in the practice and try it out for themselves.

People who have tried the Wim Hof method do so for different reasons.

For Laird Hamilton and many others, it is to improve performance. At the same time, people like Matt D’Avella challenge themselves to cold showers for 30 days to step out of their comfort zone.

For anyone interested in checking it out, you don’t need to be as extreme as Wim Hof is. Starting by simply trying out some new breathing exercises or switching from a hot shower to a colder shower could be enough to get you started.

What do you think? Would you try this?
