Let’s face it, nobody likes the commute to work. Living in a heavily populated city, I’ll admit that I find myself complaining more about the drive into the city and the traffic than anything else. Really, there’s little to nothing that could make me look forward to being stuck on the freeway.
For some though, driving to work in an air-conditioned car could be the biggest blessing of all.
That just so happens to be the case for Justin Korva, a 20-year-old from Rockwell, Texas. According to CBS News, Korva was surprised with a brand new Toyota Camry by total strangers.
On a hot Texas day, Rockwell resident Andy Mitchell spotted Korva walking and pulled over to offer him a ride. According to FOX 4, Korva was walking to work and there told Mitchell that he was saving for a car.
“That’s why I was saving for to get a car,” Korva told FOX 4. “It’s just an instant blessing, an instant surprise.”
Before dropping him off, Mitchell took a photo with Korva and posted it to his Facebook.
That photo caught traction on Facebook, receiving over 2,000 reactions and over 200 shares. As the post generated buzz on social media, others in the community stepped up in an effort to help Korva. One of those people was Samee Dowlatshahi, the owner of Samee’s Pizza Get Italian Bistro & Lounge in Rockwell, reports CBS.
Dowlatshahi offered to set up a donation box at his restaurant to help the 20-year-old. Within two days, $5,500 was donated in support of Korva, ABC News reports.
According to CBS News, it was from Samee’s restaurant that Danny Rawls, the general sales manager at Toyota of Rockwater and Dowlatshahi, heard about Korva’s struggle to get to work. Rawls took the story to his boss and they were able to reduce the price on a Toyota Camry that was available.
“I sent [Dowlatshahi] a private message and said, ‘Give me a call,” Rawls explained to CBS News. “ I have a nice car that would work for the kid.’”
All of this good will and support culminated when Mitchell, Rawls, and Dowlatshahi drove the Camry to Taco Casa. There, Mitchell’s wife filmed Korva’s reaction to receiving the car and being told that he would no longer have to walk to work.
Donations for Korva were so overwhelming, they were not only able to pay off the car, but also cover two years of oil changes, a year of insurance, and a $500 gas card.
“It’s a blessing,” Korva told ABC News. I feel like after they gave me a car, I feel like I just want to pass that on to everybody because a lot of people need that – to really know like, keep going, you know what I mean?
Truly, this story out of Rockwell, Texas is a testament to the human spirit and our capacity to help one of our own in need. Although things may seem grim at times, we need to be reminded to keep out head up and keep working hard. Likewise, when we see someone in need, we should be willing to extend a helping hand.
