When we think of bikers, we often think of the scary biker gangs who are portrayed on popular media. These people are rough, tough, and not to be messed with. We often don’t expect them to have hearts of gold.
One loving mother was desperate to give her child an unforgettable birthday party, and it seemed that her dream was a world away . . . until a bunch of bikers showed up and changed everything.
Thomas Karna is a little boy who lives in Wisconsin, and his mom, Maranda, would do anything for him. The child’s tenth birthday was coming up, and his mom wanted to give him the best birthday party ever. So they made up some invitations and passed them out to all of Thomas’ classmates.
In all, they handed out 70 invitations. Maranda was determined to make her son’s party amazing, so she was heartbroken when only 3 children sent back RSVPs. What was worse – only one student said he would attend.
Maranda was at a total loss. She couldn’t bear the thought of her boy feeling rejected on his birthday. Thomas’ health problems made his life hard enough, and this would be a fatal blow to his ego.
The little boy has autism and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), meaning that his stomach and intestines moved into his chest cavity at birth. Thomas was such a sweet child, Maranda wanted his birthday to be a day of joy and celebration.
She talked to her best friend, Stephanie Lovejoy, about her predicament. Stephanie had a brilliant idea – she created a Facebook event for Thomas. She made the event public and asked for just one thing.
Thomas was a huge fan of motorcycles, so Stephanie asked if any bikers in the area would be willing to show up to his birthday party. The family would be sitting in the park on Sunday, and they wanted a few extra guests to celebrate with.
Stephanie expected maybe 20 people to show up, but she, Maranda, and Thomas were in for the surprise of a lifetime
.A GIANT group of bikers showed up for the birthday boy’s big day, and they couldn’t be happier to celebrate him. Thomas stood in the center of an enormous crowd while countless motorcycle riders sang “Happy Birthday.” It was an experience Thomas and his family would never forget.
“It showed him that he matters, that he’s important, that he is loved,” Maranda declared after seeing the huge turnout. This little boy who had hardly gotten an RSVP to his party was able to laugh and cheer with dozens of people who shared his interests, and it meant the world to him.
“I feel like I’m famous!” Thomas declared as he looked around at all the shining faces.
The bikers themselves had a number of reasons for showing up to the party, from the fact that some friends were going to factors that were much more personal. “My son is autistic,” explained one man who wore a cross around his neck. He shared that it had broken his heart to hear of Thomas’ empty guestbook, so he decided to give his day to celebrate with the little boy.
Once one rider had agreed to attend the party, the rest easily went along with it. “When a fellow biker calls we just show up,” a woman told the camera. Being a part of such a tight-knit group can definitely have its advantages, especially when you want to make a big splash at an event like this one. The sheer number of bikers who came to support Thomas was astounding but more than that these people proved how big their hearts really are.
“It’s amazing to know that all these people came here for me, to celebrate me,” Thomas said with a smile on his face. He had a delicious cake and a smashing party, and the cherry on top was a motorcycle ride with his dad – along with his brand new group of friends.
A little kindness can really go a long way. We don’t often think of bikers as having open hearts, but this group turned Thomas’ entire day around and made his birthday one that he will never forget.
