Talk about manpower!

Many hands make light work. We have all heard this saying before, but it could not be more appropriate for this situation. A group of Amish men came together to carry a barn – with their bare hands – across a farm. The impressive feat could have never been accomplished, nor so quickly, without the help and friendship of an entire community who came together to help their neighbor.

250 men helped carry the barn to its new location.

The whole community came out to help with this massive undertaking. The families arrived at the Joseph Hochstetler Farm on Snively Road in Holmes County, Ohio. The move is risky and takes perfect coordination for the men to all lift at the same time and walk at the same rate. The men lined up on all sides of the barn, each taking a section to lift.

“Alright, take a hold,” instructs one man who then yells, “Go!”

All at the same time, they lift straight up, each with a handhold. They steadily carried the huge barn across the open field which was about 150 feet away from its original position. When they reached the other side, in perfect coordination, they began to rotate the barn clockwise, laying it in its new position.

The whole process only took about five minutes.

With so many hands, the men were able to gently carry the barn to its new spot and even rotating it around from its original position. The skill of these men to coordinate this move without twisting the barn or rushing one another proves that they are used to working well with one another.

The move was dangerous, had anyone tripped or lost their hold, the structure could have comprised or fallen on the men. But these men coming together saved countless days and a huge expense from tearing down the barn, only to rebuild it in another location. One person or even one family would have never been able to accomplish this massive move without the help of their community.

This is a process that often happens in the Amish community.

Many descendants of the current-day Amish communities left their homes in Europe after undergoing persecution for their religious beliefs. Today, they live in tight-knit communities and often willingly forego modern-day amenities such as electricity and vehicles.

Many travel by buggy and horseback, make their own clothing and live within their community their entire lives. Taking on such a massive move, you would have to have the help of many friends and family members. The Amish are known for taking on big projects such as moving and raising barns. With their many skillful hands, they can often raise an entire pole barn from the ground in a manner of days.

They are a great example of teamwork and how helping one another can lead to massive things getting done.
