City living ain’t always easy. Efficient and people-friendly design is absolutely essential. Some cities have upped their game, providing incredibly unique conveniences and perks to local city dwellers. Below, check out 25 of the coolest city designs on the planet!
1) Decorative, automatic street lights
These glamorous streetlights not only light up the road, but they provide a funky, cool aesthetic. Plus, they automatically adapt to differences in lighting and precipitation.
2) Bus library
Libraries are sanctuaries. Buses, on the other hand, can be bustling, tedious settings. Bus libraries can make drives so much smoother… and way less boring. This is a wonderful idea.
3) Working on that beach bod?
The sun’s not always kind. Every now and then ya gotta get some shade. Here, the boardwalk’s supplemented with a giant green hat shader.
4) 3-D public transit
Honestly, some buses and trains are incredibly stuffy. Certain cities have gone through the trouble of adding unique patterns and designs to their transportation. Here, three-dimensional designs on the floor add a little more depth. Hopefully, these kids can swim!
5) Water bottle fill station
Free water’s always appreciated, especially when you’re taking that daily jog or bike ride. Some cities have made it very easy to get free water to fill up your empty bottle.
6) LED benches
Benches are generally pretty dull. Normally, they’re brown, gray, or white, reflective of the material used to build them. Some city spaces decided to kick things up a notch with LED-colored benches.
7) Umbrella guards
You don’t want to enter a building with a soaking umbrella. The water gets everywhere. Plus, they’re a hassle to carry. Some cities have awesome umbrella locks so that you never have to worry about umbrella theft again.
8) Rolling bench
Sitting on the bench is no fun right after a storm. Fortunately, some places have outfit their benches with rolling mechanisms. Simply roll the handle for dryness.
9) Dog water fountain
Water fountains can be found everywhere. But what about your canine companion? Some innovative spots already have it covered.
10) Scooter locks
Scooter theft’s a real problem! Bikes aren’t the only personal vehicles that get jacked in the night. Some cities have implemented scooter protection locks.
11) Road sprinklers
Countless city streets are teeming with dirty roads. Some cities have added sprinkler systems to their pavement markers. Interesting.
12) Bus stop swing
Bus stops are generally as boring as it gets. So what have some cities done to spruce up bus stop life? Swings, yes swings.
13) Elevator reminders
Ever forget what floor you’re on? Me too. It’s oh so simple, yet can save you so much time.
14) Mall slide
A slide as an alternative for an escalator? Sign me up. Even adults can enjoy slides.
15) Multi-purpose billboards
Billboards can be more than just ads. Innovative designs have been taking billboards to new heights (figuratively). They’re too many ads in the world, as is.
16) Train bike storage
This train sports a platform to put your bike. That way, bikes won’t take up any regular carriage space.
17) Bike escalator
Biking’s awesome. Biking up hills? Not so much. Check out this Norwegian bike escalator. My bike’s jealous.
18) USB ports for each seat
Chargers can be hard to find. Most buses don’t have the hookups. This one does… near every seat.
19) Bathroom stall lights
These days, occupancy lights are pretty common in certain parking garages. But I’ve never seen them in bathrooms – a time and awkwardness-saving advent.
20) Toys on trains
Everyone’s seen a toy train. But what about a toy in a train? Particularly, a train toy? The Fujikyu Railway Line in Japan implemented some cool train toys for traveling kids.
21) Car guard
Opening car doors in parking lots and garages can be tricky sometimes. This garage takes all the necessary precautions.
22) Accessible sea turtle
This sea turtle’s low to the ground for a reason. The seahorses and other aquatic organisms can be particularly hard to climb, but this turtle grants easy access to everyone.
23) Tulip chairs
Ever sat in a tulip chair? Me neither. Some locales decided it’d be a good idea. I agree.
24) Invisible fence
Fences can be pretty obtrusive, aesthetically. Well, certain areas took note. These fences reflect, blending in with the environment.
25) Starry night
Some places took the typical bike path to the next level. It kinda looks like biking on actual stars.
