You could be having a pretty grouchy day, but admit it, pictures of cats still make you smile. Adorable felines just have a way of melting away worries and troubles even if it’s just for a few moments.
Pictures of cats doing the cutest and most ridiculous things abound on social media, but did you know that people have been taking photos of their cats ever since the camera was invented over a century ago?
Check out some of these vintage photos of our feline friends:
1. Knitting in 1913
Ok, maybe it’s just waiting for the yarn to drop.
2. President Coolidge’s cats in a basket
Then again, cats don’t really have to worry about international affairs.
3. Moisant and Mademoiselle, 1911
A very photogenic cat and quite a calm companion, if you ask us.
4. Sax cat, 1946
They were so good that even this cat took notice and crashed the set.
5. Harry Whittier’s “The entanglement”
Amazing to think that the photographer was able to make them pose and stay still for the shot.
6. Canary can cat, 1928
The bird is Caruso, owned by President Coolridge. Apparently, the 2 animals really were friends!
7. Baby Beede with a kitten, 1939
All we really know about this photo is that it was taken on an October day in Colorado.
8. Cat photography, 1898
And even the photographer knew it.
9. The cat’s got milk, 1941
Cat saw the opportunity. Cat licked the opportunity.
10. Thanks for listening
The buzz and the fuzz.
11. He is the alpha
This cat worked long and hard to provide a meal, and it looks like those kittens aren’t leaving the table until it’s gone.
12. Come on, Bobbie
Or was that a farewell leg rub?
13. Pioneer kitty is hungry
Those eyes tell us everything we need to know.
14. A little sip won’t hurt
Free beer is so much better.
15. The masked cat
That sounds familiar, right?
Even the kitten was doing its part.
16. The boy’s got a critic
We all know cats have all sorts of weird moods.
17. Sailor’s remedy
This sailor knew what the best cures were. One can only go so far with a bottle, but with cats, the world seems better both day and night.

18. Respect the veteran
This brave kitty served 15 years of her life on board.
19. Adopt, don’t shop
Well whatever it was, her adorable face is one full of love.
20. The Royal Navy never looked better
Just look at how much these men enjoyed the company of their furry compatriot.
It turns out we’ve been taking photos of cats as long as we’ve had the technology. The internet just helped us spread them farther and wider.
