There is a reason that shows like Monsters Inside Me were so popular back in the day. Humans have a DISGUSTING fascination with creatures that make their homes inside other creatures.
Whether it’s bugs, parasites, or flesh-eating viruses, we always find ourselves incapable of looking away from these stories.
With that in mind, here’s 19 more :
1. A Parasitic Twin
Sanju Bhagat went to the hospital one day when he realized that his stomach had become large and rock hard. It was so bad that his stomach was actually pressed up against his diaphragm, making it hard to breathe. Doctors initially thought it was a tumor, but soon discovered something rather perplexing.
After pulling out the “tumor,” body parts started coming with it. Arms, legs, and genitalia all came out of this Bhagat’s stomach like a straight-up horror film.
As it turns out, it was his once-twin brother who died in utero. It was “alive,” feeding off Bhagat, but not in the way we would normally think of something as alive.
2. Squid Sperm sushi
Raw seafood is something that people have trouble with. But for one woman in South Korea, seafood is probably permanently off the menu. Biting into her meal, she felt pricking and movement inside her mouth. Although she tried to spit it out, the things had already latched into her mouth like knives.
As it turns out, she had bitten into a squid sperm sack and the sperm were essentially trying to “impregnate” the inside of her mouth.
This wasn’t the first time this has happened to someone, either!
3. Turbo the snail
In 2013, a four-year-old named Paul fell and skinned his knee at the beach. His parents put a covering on it and left it to heal.
Weeks later, however, and the wound had festered and become severely infected. Treating it with antibiotics seemed the best thing to do, but when doctors took a look, they noticed a black lump under Paul’s skin.
When they cut it open, they found a snail living under his knee!
Incredibly, the family kept it and named it Turbo.
4. The adventure of “Spiderman”
Dylan Maxwell went on a trip to Bali in 2014 when something horrible happened. A spider had crawled into his appendix scar and burrowed into his stomach and eventually, into his chest.
He tracked the spider through the red lines appearing on his body and eventually had it removed.
His friends now call him “Spiderman.”
5. A cockroach between the eyes
Doctors in India discovered a cockroach had made its home in a woman’s skull after she came forward and literally said she felt like something was crawling inside her skull.
It looked like it went into her nose as she slept and got lodged in her skull between her eyes!
Ack!
6. Botfly in the eye
A 5-year-old boy in Honduras got botfly eggs in his eye. Botflies are probably the most disgusting things on the planet and ley eggs in feces and dirt. Rabbits, cats, and deer are usually the main targets, but sometimes a human gets in the way.
They create massive holes and turn into huge grubs living inside your skin.
The photos of the removal were published in a July 2000 article in the Archives of Ophthalmology and we can guarantee you don’t want to see them.
7. Fish in the urethra
An Indian boy went to the hospital when he wasn’t able to pee and his bladder was in serious pain. When they took him to surgery they found a small fish inside his bladder.
When asked how it happened, he basically said that he was cleaning the aquarium and then went to the bathroom…and frankly, we don’t want to know more details.
8. Eel in the urethra
What is it with urethras? In some countries, there is a famous practice of laying in a pool with fish or eels and allowing them to eat the dead skin off your body, thereby cleaning it.
Zhang Nan, a 56-year-old man, went to do just that when he looked down and saw a little eel trying to get access where it didn’t belong.
He tried to grab it but was too late. It was 6 inches long and had totally gone inside him.
9. Maggots in the scalp
In 2007, Aaron Dallas from Colorado was having a really bad hair day. He simply couldn’t stop itching his scalp and it had been weeks of torture. Shampoo and special products didn’t work and he was in anguish.
Soon, he started feeling crawling and sharp pains in his skull (never a good sign).
He likely got them when he went on a trip to Belize and was bitten on the head by a mosquito. He had a pit in his head that was filled with maggots.
10. Eel in the anus
Never try to recreate what you see on tv or *ahem* in adult films. One man tried to place an eel up his anus after seeing the “move” in a film.
The eel was 20 inches long and started eating away at the man’s intestine before he could finally have it removed.
11. Brain tumor to tapeworm
Rosemary Alvarez believed she had a brain tumor when she started experiencing bouts of dizziness and blurred vision. Going to the ER twice, doctors told her she was fine when the CAT scans came up totally clear. Finally, she went to a neurologist who took an MRI of her… and immediately sent her into surgery.
She had a tapeworm living in her brain, eating it alive.
12. 9-foot tapeworm
In 2006, Anthony Franz enjoyed salmon at a Chicago restaurant that was quite fancy.
A little while later, he had a 9-foot tapeworm removed from his intestines. It’s safe to say that he pressed charges.
13. Spider scratching in skull
Li Meng went to the hospital after she repeatedly heard scratching noises inside her head. She had been afraid of the hospital but finally went after the pain became unbearable for her.
When they looked inside, they found a live spider making a web inside her ear canal and sitting on her eardrum.
14. Pea plant
Ron Sveden’s story gets the honor of the first plant on the list.
In 2010, Sveden was rushed to the hospital after his lung suddenly collapsed. Assuming cancer, he was worried… until the X-rays came back.
It turns out a pea plant had sprouted and was half an inch in size inside his chest cavity!
15. Raccoon worm
John Matthews, a resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, thought he was going blind. When he finally went to an eye specialist, they learned that he had a rare worm in his eye known as a raccoon worm.
Using a special laser, they were able to zap it, saving his vision.
16. Fir tree
For our second vegetarian nightmare, we look to Aryyom Sidorkin of Russia. Sidorkin started coughing up blood and decided that was enough of a reason to go to the hospital.
“We were 100% sure,” Vladimir Kamashev, a surgeon in Izhevsk in the Urals told The Telegraph. “We did X-rays and found what looked exactly like a tumor.
In fact, it wasn’t a tumor. It was a legit fir tree growing in his lungs. He must have accidentally inhaled it.
17. A live fish
In 2012. a 12-year-old accidentally swallowed a 9-centimeter long fish while playing in the river in India.
When the doctors took a look into his lungs, they found the fish alive and wriggling! It was removed and probably flushed down a toilet.
18. Dandelion ears
In 2013, a 16-month-old girl was brought into the hospital in China. When they looked in her ear, they discovered a fully-grown dandelion that had wrapped itself in her ear canal.
The parents had no idea it had even gotten in there!
19. Spider senses
In 2012, a Chinese woman had a bad case of “itchy ears.”
After going to the hospital, she learned that she had a spider nesting in her ear. The doctors were afraid it would try and burrow so they decided to flush it out with a saline solution.
Had enough gruesome stories yet? We sure have!
