Jumpstyle is an electronic music dance which started in Belgium and later exploded in Germany.
It’s most often called “Jumpen” in Germany and the Netherlands and is now popular all through Western Europe and spreading around the world.
It’s high-energy and requires a lot of footwork. It’s usually performed by solo dancers, or in small groups.
So when these 150 students in Mannheim, Germany took to the floor of their school it was quite a surprise!
They flooded the gymnasium to perform in front of their classmates, all hopping in time to the music.

I don’t know if blue and green tops were a requirement of the routine, or they’re just the hot trend with the kids these days, but look at that color co-ordinating!
They dance to a mash up of several hot electro songs, hopping back and forth repeating their footwork in time.
It must be a good leg workout to be jumping up and down like that!

For some sections of the dance, smaller groups have the chance to be featured.
The other kids all drop to a squat on the floor and continue to keep drumming on the floor along to the tune. These 8 girls continue with the routine – with all eyes on them!

They even change up the repetition of the moves slightly by doing some extra fancy footwork and turning to face each other.
It almost looks a little like a group of girls skipping rope. Maybe they can take these slick new moves to the playground after their performance!
One dancer in the group is so talented that he gets his own solo.
Instead of the traditional jumpstyle footwork, he’s been given some creative license to incorporate his own choreography.

The sea of kids continue to follow the instructions of their two enthusiastic teachers, who stands at the front cheering them on along with the rest of the school.
It must have been their idea to teach the kids this routine, which is so much more fun than the regular curriculum which sometimes doesn’t even include dance at all!

Another group gets to have their moment in the spotlight and it becomes clear that the color co-ordination has been grouped strategically.

Some of the teachers join the students as they near the end of the routine, and the crowd is going wild.

Jumping All Over the World was a smash hit song by a German band in the early 2000s which swept the country and more of Western Europe. It played a major role in building the popularity of Jumpen, or Jumstyle as a whole.
This style of music has crossed over into American music as well, with artists like Savage, Major Lazer, and The Partysquad taking inspiration from the European genre.
Incorporating Jump style into the kids’ education is an amazing way to keep the students interested. They’re still getting in lots of exercise, but are learning a dance that feels more relevant and hip which they’re happy to show off to all their classmates.
Great idea, educators!

Their video already has more than 2 million views, and has surely inspired more teachers to include a fun dance routine at school.
