We love our pets dearly and could never imagine them hurting us.
Still, whether it’s from being pushed too far or a random snap, there have been animals that have severely hurt the ones that love them. In some cases, these attacks are deadly.
Let’s look at 15 of the scariest examples of when animals turn on their owners:
1. Travis the Chimp
So, this is why we don’t keep chimps as pets.
Travis lived with his owner, Sandra Herold, and was often featured on television and movie features. One day, Herold invited her friend, Charla Nash, to help get Travis in his cage. Then, he gruesomely attacked the friend, ripping at her face. The head paramedic who treated Nash on the scene told the New York Times he had “never seen anything this dramatic on a living patient.”
After attacking Nash, the 200-pound chimp turned on Herold even after she grabbed a knife to defend herself.
Travis would end up ripping a door off a police car and, sadly, he was shot in the end by an officer he also attacked.
2. Scarface the Pitbull
If you’re wondering what happens when you name your pit bull “Scarface” and then try to put a quaint sweater on him, here you go:
After Scarface’s owners tried to place him in a sweater, he had apparently had enough. He attacked Brenda Guerro, his 52-year-old owner, as well as her husband, Ishmael.
They eventually escaped outside and animal control tased Scarface, but it didn’t even subdue him at first. When police were finally able to enter, there were still two children in the home with the dog. They were completely unharmed.
3. Teddy the bear
In case you need to be told that keeping a caged bear as a pet is a bad idea:
Raising a bear sounds crazy, but the Walz family did just that. Their bear, Teddy, attacked and killed Kelly Walz as she was cleaning the cage… while he was still in it. When the kids found Kelly, their father ended up shooting him.
4. Pet black widow
In one of the grossest stories on the list, it all started when Mark Voegel began hoarding in his home. He eventually amassed a collection of hundreds of spiders, snakes, and lizards until one day, one of them bit him.
He died in his apartment and his reptiles, spiders, and insects… well, they ate him.
5. Pet deer
Gerald Rushton had a pet red stag deer that weighed 500-pounds. Keeping the stag in his yard, Rushton would feed it and was trying to domesticate it.
It all went south when the deer gored and trampled the man, killing him.
The police found other wild animals on his property as well – he seemed to be trying to domesticate them as a hobby.
6. Gypsy the Burmese Python
Jaren Hare and Charles Darnell owned a python named Gypsy. Although it was kept in a glass case, it was only draped with a blanket and had no real lid. Eventually, Gypsy escaped and saw Hare’s 2-year-old in the other room.
It killed and attempted to eat the little girl, which is horrific. And it may come as no surprise to snake-lovers that further investigation revealed the owners had neglected the snake and been incredibly careless about its care in general.
Too bad their baby girl had to pay the price.
7. Pet mountain lion
Amber Couch owned a 150-lb mountain lion in Odessa Texas. Sigh.
Couch had received citations after she refused to increase the size of the cage for her pet, as well as falling behind on its vaccinations.
It was only a matter of time before something bad happened. Unfortunately, it happened to a kid who got too close and was slashed by the mountain lion’s claws across the face.
The kid lived, but the mountain lion was euthanized.
8. Humphrey the Hippo
Although a name like Humphrey leads you to believe an animal may be harmless, that was the furthest thing from the truth in this situation.
South African army major Marius Els adopted the hippo when it was only 5-months-old and attempted to domesticate him, even calling him a “son.” Humphrey had a few run-ins with other creatures prior to the big tragedy, but that didn’t keep Els from loving him like a child.
We can only imagine what went through the man’s head as he was later killed by the animal. Els’s ravaged body was found face-down in the same river where the hippo had been rescued.
9. A camel in heat
They say that you don’t want to get in the middle of a male and a female animal in heat – this may be plenty of proof!
Pam Weaver was given a camel for her birthday (she already had a large farm of cattle and sheep). She brought the animal into her fold where the camel took a strange liking to the family goat, and was clearly intent on making things happen.
One day, the camel decided that it was through with goats and was more interested in Pam Weaver herself. The camel knocked her over and sat on her, killing her. And to make matters even more gruesome, it “exhibited mating behavior” towards her after that.
10. Simba the lion
Al Abell was a citizen of Illinois who kept an exotic animal zoo named Cougar Bluff Enterprise. Among his exotic animals was Simba, a 400-lb lion.
Abell was meticulous with his care regimen for his animals but made a rather fatal mistake.
While cleaning Simba’s pen, he forgot to lock the secondary cage that he was contained in, allowing Simba to escape.
When they found him, Abell had bled to death from a wound on his leg.
11. Pet wolf-dogs
Sandra Piovesan had a “pack” of nine wolf-dogs that she had been training for years. Wolf-dogs are hybrids and often resemble wolves, with a few of the familiar doggy characteristics.
Sandra lived alone, however, and was one day found dead in her pet’s enclosure with multiple injuries sustained from her “pets.”
12. Pet bull
Ricky Weinhold had a one-ton bull that he owned on his farm in Pennsylvania. He had already been hurt by the bull a year prior, but refused to get rid of it.
A day before he turned 53, Ricky was found dead, trampled to death by the bull.
13. Killed by her own dogs
A woman in Arkansas owned 50 dogs in her home, all of which were incredibly unhealthy.
The woman was a hoarder and eventually died in her home.
The hungry dogs ended up eating her body and many of them had to be euthanized.
14. Pet pigs
This story shows that pigs will truly eat anything. Terry Garner was a farmer in Oregon and had gone out to check on the pigs when he never returned.
When he was found hours later, all that was left was his dentures and a few spare body parts. It looks like he had a cardiac arrest and fell into the pigpen. Which was probably lucky for him considering the alternative which was to feel himself being eaten.
15. Pet tiger
Most people would know not to keep a pet tiger, but Antoine Yates clearly didn’t. He had a fully-grown alligator and tiger living in his apartment in Harlem, New York back in 2003!
Yates showed up at a hospital one day with severe wounds “from his dog,” and eventually, his pets were taken away from him. It probably saved his life.
The lessons from these stories are pretty clear – if it’s not a pet, don’t treat it like one! Inviting a wild animal into your home without the proper training can be quite deadly.
Maybe keep an eye on Fluffy, your mini-poodle this week too. You can never be too sure…
