It’s pretty intimidating to audition on a show like Britain’s Got Talent.

It’s another thing entirely to sing one of the most difficult songs on Broadway.

But that’s exactly what 12-year-old Beau Dermott did, stunning the judges and audiences alike and earning Judge Amanda Holden’s Golden Buzzer.

When Beau walked onto the stage in her blue dress and said in her quiet voice that she was going to sing “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked, the judges were skeptical.

And who wouldn’t be with such a challenging choice.

Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon gaped, while Simon Cowell raised his eyebrows.

“Defying Gravity” was made famous by Idina Menzel, an actress and singer known for her powerful vocals.

Menzel gained prominence for her vocals in several difficult roles, including Maureen in Rent, Elphaba in Wicked, and most notably, Queen Elsa in Frozen.

Her voice is recognizable across all ages and genres.

Those were Menzel’s vocals were heard incessantly in the song “Let It Go.”

So, it’s safe to say that people raise an eyebrow at any 12-year-old who says she can sing it. But the judges — and the audience — had no idea what was coming their way.

The moment Beau started singing, it was clear they were dealing with a singer of a different caliber.

The preteen had a powerful voice with a maturity well beyond her years.

Hard to imagine a voice like that coming from this young lady, isn’t it? Well that’ really her!

The judges and audience were overwhelmed by her talent.

Even Cowell was grinning from ear to ear. And that is not an easy feat.

Beau could tell that the crowd loved her.

As she finished the famously hard song — with its even famously harder ending — she held her hands up in the air and grinned.

Beau nailed it and she knew it!

The audience and judges jumped to their feet to give her a standing ovation.

Then came chants of “Push the Golden Buzzer! Push the Golden Buzzer!”

Beau had tears in her eyes as she listened to the cheers.

She deserves it with talent like that.

Then she threw her hands over her mouth as Amanda Holden jumped up without a word and pounded the Golden Buzzer.

She ran onto the stage to give Beau a hug.

“You were so, so, so amazing,” she said. “Really, really, really, I’m so excited for you. You’re gonna be brilliant.”

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell put things in his usual blunt way. But he said it wasn’t about her being “good for her age,” but rather the fact that she was just good, period.

“I was not expecting that,” said Cowell. “It’s not the fact that you’re 12 and have an incredible voice; it’s the fact that you’ve got an incredible voice.”

And incredible it was. Beau’s song of choice says it all. And on stage in front of those judges too!

Her natural talent truly grabbed everyone’s heart.

Although she didn’t win the season, she did make it to the finale, finishing fifth due to a popular vote.

That’s still enough to put her on the map and grab the attention of record labels.

You never know!

The Golden Buzzer has been in place on Britain’s Got Talent since Series 8.

Each judge may push it once each season. It sends the performer straight through to the live semi-finals without the required yeses from the other judges.

So they need to seriously consider an audition before using that privilege.

It’s like the Midas Touch for both judge and performer. It could make or break both parties.

Other Golden Buzzer acts on Britain’s Got Talent include Calum Scott, Toju, and Paddy and Nico.

Amanda had no regrets using her one chance to hit that golden buzzer.

Beau stunned everyone. Let’s hope she takes off and has a very successful singing career. She’s gold!
