Travel Beauty Tips To Keep You Glam On The Go

Travel is stressful enough without having to worry about maintaining your beauty routine.

Between making sure your products don’t leak in your bag to cramming your carry-on liquids and gels into a TSA-approved container, it’s hard to stay glam on the go. And that’s before you take into account the havoc that dry air, over bleached hotel sheets, and travel stress wreak on your hair and skin.

Next time you’re packing for a trip, keep these tips and tricks in mind to keep your skin glowing strong.

Drink up

You might be sick of hearing it, but the best way to keep your skin moist and your body well-regulated while traveling is to drink water.

Whether it’s the dry air of a plane or the heat or A/C in your car on a road trip, even oily skin gets dried out while traveling.

And while it’s nice to indulge in an adult beverage sometimes, staying hydrated is the cheapest and surest way to arrive at your destination looking refreshed.

Avoid hotel soaps and hair care

Complimentary hotel toiletries can be lifesavers if you forget something or simply don’t have room for your whole routine. But if your routine is carefully calibrated to avoid harsh ingredients, you’ll want to bring your own.

Even the finest hotels rarely provide shampoos and conditioners for color-treated hair or sensitive skin, so if you don’t want to worry about fading color or breakouts, best to bring your own products.

Use the plane as your spa

No one wants to watch you slap cucumbers over your eyes on a transatlantic flight, but there are some great products that will help you relax on a long haul.

Fly in style with a silk eye mask to help you get some shut-eye. Extra points if it has a faint lavender scent.

If you get up to use the tiny restroom during the flight, you can use the opportunity to freshen up with a hydrating spritz.

Don’t get handsy

You probably don’t want to think about all the germs you come into contact with while you travel. Without getting into gruesome detail, let’s just say that it’s best not to touch your face a lot while traveling.

Avoid breakouts, oiliness, and pulling at dry skin by keeping your hands off your face and neck unless you’ve just washed them.

Pack wisely

It’s always good to invest in some TSA-approved containers for your carry-on beauty items. Just note that cheap plastic can leach chemicals into your beauty products and clear containers can allow too much light in and make your active ingredients less effective.

Avoid storing your carry-ons in direct light. Or else simply wrap them carefully and store them in your checked luggage.

Duty-free is your friend

Many larger airports will allow you to shop in the duty-free store for items like skin care products even if you’re not flying internationally.

These stores often carry some amazing high-end beauty products that you can grab at a discount, or at least minus the tax.

If you buy a beauty product in the airport, you also don’t need to worry about getting a larger liquid onto a plane since all of the items have been vetted and are purchased after security.

If you don’t want to invest in new products while you travel, it can also be a great place to go in and refresh your makeup with their testers.

Stock up on samples

If you have a favorite product, it might be worth grabbing some sample sizes from beauty stores that give them away.

You can even scour eBay or Poshmark for bulk samples, so long as you’re careful about the expiration date.

Minis and sample sizes (unless they’re free) aren’t always the best deal, but they will save you space and frustration when you’re on the go. Think of it as an investment in your sanity.

Be mindful of others when it comes to scents and spritzes

If you’re chilling out on the plane with your refreshing or relaxing scents or spray bottles, always be mindful that you’re surrounded by sensitive noses.

Make sure you don’t get your beauty products on anyone else, or you might find yourself in a fight with your seatmate, which is anything but zen.

Minimize in-flight makeup

If you’re on a long flight, you may consider skipping the full face of makeup or taking it off during your trip to avoid caking and creasing that can’t be covered up post-flight.

If the lights are dim, no one is going to notice anyway. But if you can’t fathom a naked face in front of others, just go easy on the foundation and powder and concentrate on mascara and a tinted lip balm instead.

The less you put on your face pre-flight, the more leeway you have to touch up or add products once you get off the plane.

Facewipes for everywhere

Remember that scented wipes can really irritate your travel mates, but it’s a good idea to bring some unscented or lightly scented wipes with you.

Not only can you freshen up mid-trip (getting the neck area, hands, and inner elbows will help you feel cleaner) but you can use them to wipe down things you might be touching that are covered with germs, like the overhead light or seatback tray table.

Time to try tinting

If you can’t bear the thought of spending extra time getting your brows and lashes perfect while you’re trying to enjoy your trip, it might be a good time to try tinting and lash lifts.

These temporary but long-lasting solutions mean you can leave the mascara and brow brush at home. That’s one less thing to touch up on the go!
