Artists are pretty creative people. So, when Robert Guthrie saw an old gas station in New Orleans, he knew exactly what he wanted to do with it, he wanted to turn it into a home for him and his son. But not just any home would do. Guthrie wanted to turn the 100-year-old station into a state-of-the-art luxury home.
Guthrie’s son thought he was crazy
When Guthrie’s son first heard what his dad wanted to do, he thought he had gone crazy. Who in their right mind would buy such an old building to live in? But Guthrie was prepared with a bunch of ideas designed to turn the former service station into a modern home with a wide range of amenities.
Guthrie took the station and turned it into a modern home
Located near New Orleans’ French Quarter, the station is a former Sinclair gas station. Sinclair is a family-owned oil company that got it’s starts back in the early 1900s. While it is no longer the size it once was, the Sinclair company still has gas stations across the country. As for Guthrie, he took the former service station and before too long had turned it into a home.
Guthrie had given the home some very artistic touches
Guthrie and his son moved into the renovated gas station. Guthrie had also lent his artistic eye to the renovations, updating the station with a more modern look while paying homage to the building’s former life as a Sinclair gas station.
Some examples of Guthrie’s artistic touch include the hydraulic lift that holds up the stairs to the second level of the home. Other touches that Guthrie used include repurposing old car emblems as cabinet handles and an old oil can holder that he turned into a toilet paper holder in the home’s bathroom. He also added a roof deck, jacuzzi, and a full kitchen to modernize the home.
“New Orleans’s is a different city, and this is a different place. I think it fits in just by being quirky,” Guthrie told CNN.
Other repurposed buildings turned into homes
Someone in the village of Burton Green in Warwickshire, UK has converted an old water tower into a six-floor home. At 246 feet high, the structure, which was built in the 1930’s, makes the perfect family home. On the bottom two floors, visitors can find a game room, kitchen, and spacious living room.
The bedrooms are located on the second and third levels and feature contemporary paneling, pendant lights, and windows that look out on the surrounding countryside. You can also step out for some fresh air in the rooftop garden, which also gives spectacular views.
There is also the converted train station located in New York, U.S.A. The two-bedroom home started life as a train station that served the New York area in the 1920s. The station platform serves as a veranda and the snug, two-story home includes a gallery, shop, and mezzanine.
