When this aging dog, Lady, was first dropped off at the shelter by her family, she was devastated. However, remaining true to her family, Lady walked all the way back to her owners, only to be sent back to the very same shelter. Thankfully, Lady has a fairy godmother watching over her that turned her tragedy into Cinderella fairytale.

For Lady, a senior lab mix, her life was turned upside-down when her family decided to drop her off at their local animal shelter. Before she could be taken in by the shelter, Lady managed to walk a staggering 30 miles back to her home, to the family that had left her behind. However, rather than keep their amazingly loyal dog, Lady’s owners drove her back to the same shelter to abandon Lady a second time.

It looked like, after being abandoned twice, that Lady would spend her golden years in a Kansas animal shelter.

Thankfully, one woman chose to rescue Lady – though, she’s not just any ordinary person. Helen Rich, an heiress to the Wrigley’s Chewing Gum fortune, heard about Lady’s story and decided to help out the aging dog. Rich, who owns a massive Florida mansion, told her staff to bring Lady to join her growing brood of pampered dogs.

“She’s already been recycled three times, for heaven’s sake,” exclaimed Rich in an interview with CBS News. “She needs a home now – not tomorrow, not next week.”

Lady was then taken on an airplane by one of Rich’s staff to be flown from Kansas to Florida to go live in Rich’s sprawling 15,000 square ft. house. One of Rich’s assistants, Chet Ragsdale, even described when Lady got to look out the plane window on her new home as they landed in Tampa, describing the moment as “the most touching part”.

On the 130 acre farm, Rich also keeps several other critters, who are almost all rescue animals, including several dogs, cats, and even some livestock.

This labrador really earned her nickname “Lucky” Lady, following her amazing journey from rags to riches. Now Lady spends every day with Helen Rich as the two work around the farm and tend to the other rescued animals.

Helen Rich encourages everyone to adopt shelter and rescue animals, emphasizing how important is it to provide a loving home for animals who haven’t had one. If you’re thinking about getting a pet, please consider adopting from your local shelter.
