Over the past two months, the world has had to adjust to a very strange, and at times, scary new lifestyle.

With so many people out of work and at risk from COVID-19, now is the time to come together–from a safe distance of course.

No doubt, you’ve heard of or experienced the shortage of face masks in America.

At a time when your own health, as well as the health of others, is a top priority, having access to PPE such as face masks is incredibly important.

According to mayoclinic.org, “face masks combined with other preventive measures, such as frequent hand-washing and social distancing, help slow the spread of the disease.”

So when a local woman from Iowa decided to take it upon herself to make face masks for her community, a home-town hero was born.

Deb Siggins, a 55-year-old doctor’s office employee, decided that she wanted to do something to help out her neighbors during these difficult times.

After hearing about the face mask shortage, she decided to make some masks of her own.

“My goal was to make 100 and donate them to the hospital, but then my friends and family wanted some, too,” Siggins told Good Morning America.

So Siggins kept sewing.

Before she knew it, she had hundreds of completed face masks but no viable way to distribute them.

Since there is a social distancing measure in place, Siggins had to get creative.

She decided that the best way to get the masks out to those in need was to hang them on a tree in town.

She made a post on Facebook and then started hanging masks.

“It was really cool to see people driving up, grabbing a mask and leaving… It’s been a hit.”

Since the tree itself can only hold about 30 masks at a time, there is a limit to how many people can get a mask each day.

Not to worry though, according to Siggins, most of the masks are taken from the tree every single day and she stocks the tree with new masks each morning.

She is constantly sewing new masks, not only to restock the tree, but also to give out to first responders, paramedics, fire-fighters, and grocery store employees.

And if that isn’t enough, Siggins is paying for all of these materials out of her own pocket!

With the COVID crisis still in full swing, Siggins has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

She plans to keep making masks until they are no longer needed–which could months from now.

But that doesn’t bother Siggins.

She told Good Morning America, “I’m a giver, not a taker, so I feel really good.”

You’d have to be a giver in order to buy the material needed for over 400 face masks, spend the time to make them, and continue making them and buying more materials until they are no longer needed.

Siggins truly is a saint.

If we want to get in front of this outbreak, we need to be proactive about our health.

The CDC has advised people to use DIY face masks during this time if they don’t have access to surgical masks or N95’s.

So if you’re in need of a face mask and live near Lisbon, Iowa, why not stop by Siggins’ giving tree.

There’ll be a mask hanging there for you.
