A lot of women want to be mothers. They go through a lot just to realize their dream of giving birth to a child and being a mom. Some women take fertility medications while others succeed with complex processes like IVF.

Sheree Psaila was told she couldn’t be a mom.

This is because of a condition called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. It’s marked by the development of several joint contractures that affect multiple areas of the body even before birth. The contractures can negatively affect not just the function of the joints but also their range of motion.

Because of her condition, Sheree has no muscles in her limbs. Her body is too small to be capable of carrying a baby.

She was just under 122 centimeters or about 4 feet. Doctors were worried that there wouldn’t be a lot of room for the baby to grow in Sheree’s body.

The woman defied the odds.

Even with doctors telling her that she can’t have kids, Sheree found herself falling pregnant following a miscarriage. She was about 10 weeks before she found out.

As a way to ensure the safety of both mother and child, Sheree had weekly check-ups. They were closely monitored for any problems.

A week before she was scheduled to give birth, Sheree had a hard time standing up. Her doctors inserted a PICC line and scheduled her for cesarean delivery.

Sheree shared:

“At first, the doctors wanted to do an epidural so I could be awake. But because my spine isn’t completely straight they put me under general anaesthetic. I really wanted to be awake when delivering, but safety was our main priority. Chris got to watch the delivery through a glass window.”

Sheree’s baby was born at 36 weeks.

The little boy weighed in at 5.5 lbs and he was 47cm tall at birth. They named him Hayden. The doctors found no disabilities or problems in the child which is incredible news for the family.

Sheree is enjoying her new role despite the challenges.

“I love being a mum but it does get frustrating at times because there are a lot of things I can’t do. Sometimes Hayden will cry and I can’t reach him to pick him up. I have to wait for someone to pick him up for me I can change his nappy, but it takes a lot longer and I need assistance because I can’t lift his legs up.” – she said.

Sheree is a fighter.

This isn’t the first challenge Sheree faced. In fact, she went through a lot even before she was born.

During her mom’s pregnancy, doctors suggested abortion but she declined. After she was born, they feared that she wouldn’t be able to live beyond her first year of life.

Sheree, however, was able to survive. She turned 22, married the love of her life, got pregnant, and gave birth. She’s living life as normally as possible with her husband and adorable baby boy.
