Woman Starts To Cut A Piece Of Paper - Watch As A Stunning Octopus Comes To Life From It

Some people are as patient as they are talented. Masayo Fukuda is one of those people.

The Japanese artist has been making hand-cut paper figures for almost 25 years, and her experience shows in her craftsmanship.

From painfully intricate birds to a truly life-like octopus made out of one simple sheet of paper, it’s clear that she truly has a gift for this technique (and the vision to execute it).

Let’s start with one of Fukuda’s more “simple” sea creatures. Can you believe this was made with just a piece of paper and an X-Acto knife?

Here she is sketching her design before she gets started. With just a pen and paper, she’s able to map out her future creations.

And here is the artist at work, with just two simple tools, a mat to cut on, and a flashlight to illuminate her design. This gives you an indication of how much concentration is required of the work.

Her pieces range from the tiny but intricate…

…to large and impossibly complex masterpieces.

Just look at those feathers. They’re made out of simple paper!

Isn’t that an amazing amount of detail?

While the artist creates animals, plants, and humans, it’s the sea creatures that have us most impressed.

And you haven’t seen anything until you see the evolution of her absolutely glorious octopus, large enough to take two hands to hold and all cut out of a single sheet with just a sketch and a sharp blade to assist.

Here’s a snap of the original sketch.

Can you imagine the patience and steady hands it takes to carve out all the suckers on its arms? (Did you know that octopuses don’t actually have tentacles? Just suckers, arms, and legs.)

Once Fukuda begins to cut, they transform into lacy, life-like appendages.

Just look at how the design makes it seem like the paper is stretching with life:

And while its head and eyes look like they might involve less precision in the sketch, bringing its face to life involves the most detail of all.

Anyone else might be hugely stressed by such an undertaking, but Fukudo told Bored Panda that her art actually relaxes her:

“For me, cutting pictures has become a way of dissipating all the stress of my daily life. If you want to get started, all the basics you need are tant paper, a cutter, matte, and a good light source.”

We think she left out an amazing amount of talent!

All in all, the final creation took the artist two full months to create. And while it looks multi-layered, it’s not – it was all cut from one continuous piece of A2 paper (that measures 16.5 x 23.4 inches).

While the work set against a black backdrop gives us a chance to zone in on the details, it’s really most impressive when the artist herself holds it.

But the full effect is not complete until you see the video, in which Fukuda holds and gently moves her paper octopus to make it move like it’s gently undulating in its underwater lair.
