If you are on the hunt for uplifting news to lift your day, here comes one your way! A Utah-based couple rescued three Great Pyrenees puppies tucked inside a sheep’s carcass on a snowy mountaintop. The puppies were new-born and stood no chance in this season of bitter cold until help arrived.
As if divine intervention heard their plight, a couple were snowmobiling in the vicinity when they noticed a distraught female Great Pyrenees dog. Corey Holt and Kat Perry sensed something was amiss and they tried to lure the dog’s attention.
Despite their efforts, the dog was not at all interested in their calling.
“We tried to get close but we had no food to tempt her. She was having no part of us…,” says Kat in her Facebook status about the incident.
Unfortunately, the couple left that day without any success, but they went again the next day with some food and the whole scenario finally unfolded. They searched almost three miles inland from their previous sighting of the mother, and this time they found three of her puppies around 7 weeks old with the female Great Pyrenees there as well.
“I’m not going to leave any animal on the mountain to starve, especially, it was obvious she had pups,” Kat Perry said.
The puppies were sheltering inside a sheep’s carcass shivering terribly by the bitter cold and wetness. Had Holt and Perry abandoned their pursuit the day before, the pups were surely doomed to die from harsh weather.
“The pups were cold, shivering and wet and just a little ball of ice,” Perry said.
Perry and Holt decided to bring the three puppies home to ensure their immediate safety and health. The couple enlisted the help of Weber Country Search & Rescue Team to accomplish this humane task. The female Great Pyrenees, however, resisted coming with them from the wintry Monte Cristo range in Weber County.
Therefore, the Weber County couple left 20 pounds worth of dog food for the mother and planned to come again to rescue her.
“We didn’t have a leash, we didn’t have a rope or anything so we decided the best thing was [to] get these guys out first and then go back in and try to get her,” Holt said.
According to the local media channel KSTU, investigators believed that the female dog was actually a guardian of a sheep flock which roamed the Monte Cristo mountain range during summer. Upon coming back to collect his herd, the dog could not be found as she was littering her pups away from reach at that time.
Among the saved puppies, two are males while one is a female. The kindly Kat Perry has adopted one puppy as their own – he is aptly named Polar. The other two were sent to a local rescue organization exclusively for the Great Pyrenees breed.
The puppies were lucky to find shelter and nourishment in the chilly winter season inside the sheep’s carcass or else they might not have been able to survive.
“They were living in a sheep carcass. She had found a dead sheep and they had eaten, there was nothing left, just a little bit of wool and a few big bones. I’m sure that’s what she’d been eating on all fall,” Perry said.
The search for the female Great Pyrenees has been abandoned by the Weber County Search & Rescue since she is nowhere to be found. However, local people have pledged to volunteer in search of the female dog by themselves.
