Every year when wintertime rolls around, it starts getting colder outside, the days get a little shorter, and of course, the chance of snow arises. Snow can be a one of those love-hate things — it’s beautiful and a nice change of scenery, but also can create a huge challenge trying to get anywhere. We all know the kids don’t mind though.

There is nothing kids love more than getting the day off from school when a big snowstorm hits and the roads close down.

They’ll get bundled up, head outside, and spend all day running around full of energy, building snow forts, sledding, having snowball fights, and just generally getting into trouble. That much is obvious.

On the other hand, have you ever wondered what a school principal gets up to on their day off from school?

If you thought the answer was assessing student performance, developing new curricula, planning out next years budget or really anything along those lines, we’re sorry to tell you, but you guessed completely wrong!

In a video titled Principal Snow Day at Waterloo that has been going viral on YouTube, Sean Martin, an elementary school principal from Waterloo Elementary, set out to show the world exactly what goes down when the school is empty and the principal has the whole place to himself.

“Despite how much snow we got, a principal’s job is never done, and I made it into Waterloo today for a principal snow day. In the spirit of transparency, I want you to see the successful productive day principals have on blizzard snow days,” Martin says in the video introduction.

All of a sudden the video cuts to footage of Martin dancing and singing in the empty school hallways, complete with him dressed in shorts and his dress shirt untucked.

It appears to be an attempt to recreate the dance scene from Risky Business, and it’s hilarious.

Next thing you know Martin is in the school’s gymnasium shooting backwards basketball granny shots, spinning around in circles on school equipment, and even dressing up as a school cafeteria worker to serve sloppy joes.

His commentary is awesome:

“Slop sloppy joe. Who wants some sloppy joe? Do you want some warm slop sloppy joe?”

Probably the best scene though is when he pops out of one of the school’s recycling bins.

The video continues with him running around throwing toilet paper everywhere and subsequently getting caught by the school janitor.

Apparently, the janitor is another employee who doesn’t get the day off and still has to come to work, even on a snow day.

In an interview with the Columbia Flier, the town’s local newspaper, Martin said that he was just trying to make his staff laugh.

“I figured people are starting to feel a little stir crazy, and I thought our staff and community would appreciate a lighthearted perspective about what goes on in school during snow days. I posted it to my staff first and before I realized it, I had all these hits. And I was like, how did this get this out there?”

Although it is the only video Martin has made up until this point, it is safe to say this one hit wonder has cemented his place in Internet history forever. Principal Snow Day at Waterloo now has close to two million views on YouTube.

Martin ends the video on a serious note with a very thoughtful message, thanking the school’s janitor and other custodians from the area for all their hard work, “coming in during impossible situations so that they could prepare the school for students, for their return.”

We often forget that when school closes down, even though the students and teachers are all off enjoying their surprise free time, not everyone gets a break. At least at one elementary school in Waterloo, for a few employees, there is always work to be done!
