This quarantine has been really difficult for people, and part of that difficulty is the boredom that sets in pretty quick once you’ve been home for a little too long. Lucky for us, that same boredom sparks some real creativity in people, and the Getty Museum had the bright idea of cultivating that creativity into a fun challenge for those stuck indoors: Recreate some famous artworks using whatever you have at home! This is what ensued…
1) Picture perfect!
This is insanely well done! There’s an impeccable eye for detail for everything from the background to the fan to the outfit to her hair! They have made Klimt proud this day!
2) Only a little creepy
A great rendition of Magritte’s The Lovers painting! They’ve nailed just about every part of the painting, and it must not have been an easy photo to take considering you wouldn’t be able to see your camera! I won’t comment on the lack of social distancing, after all, at least they’re wearing masks…
3) Don’t look at me like that
Very funny, very cute, and very creative. How did they somehow manage to capture the exact expression in the painting on that dog’s face? Considering the challenge was to use what you had lying around, I’d say José did perfectly! Pup booty was the last thing I was expecting out of this challenge!

4) Modern Lisa
I can only imagine that someone had heard about the Getty Museum challenge and immediately though of their friend who just so happens to look exactly like the Mona Lisa. “Hey, Lisa, I just heard about this thing and… well… You were literally made for it.”
5) My neck doesn’t bend that way
These two were probably laying in bed being all lovey dovey anyway, right? All that was left was to gather all the yellow things in the house, stand among them and get their smooch on! Is it just me or does she not seem to be enjoying that much as her painted counterpart? At least her neck isn’t bent at a ninety degree angle! Ouch!
6) Distant relatives
Wow! Superb! Alex Woollard got it spot on with this picture! He may as well have been preparing for the Getty challenge before the quarantine! What an eye for detail! The two subjects look as if they’re distantly related, and tradition has carried on strongly throughout the family.
7) Girl with purrr earring
I’m a sucker for any of these entries that involve animals, they’re just so hilarious. I’m extra happy they didn’t pierce that cat’s actual ear for this. Otherwise it’s so perfect the photo is immediately recogniseable on its own! Although, it gives me a faint memory of something else… Perhaps cat has wares if you have coin?
8) I’ve married a pot head
They must have had to rearrange their whole living room for this photo, but it paid off! It looks great, and it’s hilarious! I love the stuffed dog as a substitute for the real thing. But the crown jewel of this piece is, by far, the bizarre pot hat that buddy is wearing. Make do with what you have, I guess!
9) Mother & child
A very clever use of carpet and some paper cutouts, and we have a really beautiful, lovely recreation of Klimt’s Mother and Child. Mad respect for getting a little baby to lay still for this photo as well. The little one looks a little restless and interested in mommy’s hair!
10) Slowpoke
Now, Dali was a really weird guy, but this wasn’t one of his paintings. I’m not sure even he is that weird. The original is by Nikola Golubovski, who is arguably weirder! And I’m glad to see these two weirdos have embraced the surreal feeling of quarantine and channeled into this bizarre and hilarious recreation! Great moustache, guy!
11) Dog made modern
Hilarious and oh so clever. Beyond the very good boy who had to sit still for the photo, Rachel Forrest also employed some great photoshop skills for this recreation! Hang this up in a museum and rake in the fame of modern art!
12) Nice shiner
I’m sure only too many parents can relate to this one. If you have siblings staying together nearly 24/7 and fewer outlets for pent up energy they more often than not end up taking it out on eachother! Great attention to detail again, check out the posters in the photo for some fun detail.
13) Wild difference
This father and son duo really got it right, and included a few key changes! For one, the recreation doesn’t seem nearly as terrifying, and we are VERY thankful for that! For another, that little cherub of a child seems to be having the time of his life! Everything else they nailed with uncanny accuracy!
14) More baby eating!?
Man, art was weird, huh? Why did so many artists have such a fascination with old men eating their kids? Thanks for just using a doll this time around, dad. Another really fun, and weirdly hilarious recreation of Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya.
15) A sure hand
An absolute classic. So classic that most people will make fun of you for having one of these in your garage. ESPECIALLY if it’s by your poker table. But this was just asking to be a part of the challenge and our good friend Ryan McGuire was happy to oblige, bringing plenty of his cutest pups to the table. Literally!
16) Time traveller
A time traveller! She must be, right? She’s perfect for this painting in just about every way. Was this her Halloween costume? How on earth did she just have this stuff ready and waiting? A++, I award you 10 points.
17) Quarantine has them feeling like
Another classic that just about everyone is sure to know. And they did a great job, recreating it. I’m sure it wasn’t hard to pull off those expressions considering how they must be feeling cooped up all day!
18) Creative use of surroundings
At first, I thought this was great, and then I looked at it a bit longer and realised it’s FANTASTIC. That’s a mighty creative and clever use of sticky notes and tissue paper, my friend. I can’t blame you for not having that wardrobe just lying around! It makes me wonder what you used for your dandy makeup, though…
19) Makeup art artist
It’s pretty difficult (i.e. IMPOSSIBLE) to recreate a Picasso painting with a real life human being considering how Picasso made human beings look in his paintings. And yet this clever and creative makeup artist made it happen! With some clever camera work and a LOT of work and dedication to the finer details, she’s made it picture perfect!
20) Madonna and… Child
The low effort/low budget recreations are my favourites, I think. The really intense, perfect recreations are really impressive, but when you have something like this… Come on! It’s too hilarious! That sweet pug is looking at dear old mum even more intensely than baby jesus is staring up at Mary!
21) A self pawtrait
This entry must have been an exercise in patience for both photographer and dog! But what a great result! This one really had me cracking up, and the pup is so cute I can’t help but love the whole thing! Does that paintbrush taste good, bud?
22) The entry no one asked for
This one had me cackling, and I’m still cracking up just trying to write about it. Some very bored friends did a very good job of recreating this scene with only what they had in the house and using them as creatively as possible. I guess wardrobe wasn’t an issue! What gets me the most is that it’s really just two guys with expert photoshop skills! They fooled me at a glance!
23) Okay for real this time
This adaptation was much more faithful to the original! As in, it uses a person this time instead of a cat? The model has seriously nailed it. They seem like they could have been two images taken a few years apart after the girl with the pearl earring grew up a little!
24) Making do
How do you recreate an ancient ruin and a sprawling city? With your most used objects of course! We’re talking wine bottles and action figures since really what else are you using in quarantine anyway?
25) Toilet papyrus
I’m shocked toilet paper hasn’t been a bigger set piece during this challenge! It was the hot topic for the first couple weeks of quarantine! I’m happy to see this model didn’t use it for her head covering, that would just be wasteful and disrespectful to anyone running low on the precious stuff!
26) 2D man
This is mindblowing! He seriously made his clothes look 2D and like he had been spraypainted onto the wall behind him! Big props to him, and even more so for using a current artist like banksy! Thanks for throwing flowers instead of molotovs!
27) Popular quarantine pose
This has to be the most topical of all the entries we’ve seen so far. Even when you’re recreating classical works of art you’re still lazing about on the couch just doing nothing during quarantine. I think we’re all feeling it. Stay drooped, and stay drooped indoors, my fellow isolationists.
28) Op there it is again
I said popular, didn’t I? Even better that she’s holding a phone in this recreation. A phone she’s too bored to even look at. Maybe she’s reached the mythical end point of the internet, right around where the sidewalk ends?
29) Photogenic bb
How on earth did they get this kid to pose so perfectly for the photo? They make it look so natural and effortless. You have a talent, tiny human, don’t let it go to waste! I still stand with my shoulders up around my ears for photos because I hate cameras. A+ for wardrobe as well!
30) Macro meet micro
No cherries in the fridge? All good, just use a different red fruit or berry! No giant spoons? That’s cool, dude. Just use a regular one! Unwilling to flood your kitchen for the sake of a photo for internet strangers? Well, alright, just make a little puddle at least. Seriously, this is very well done. Minimalist and perfect!
31) The paintings are coming to life
Seriously, she looks perfect. Like someone just wished a painting to be real and landed on this one somehow. Even those roses in the back have an almost painted quality to them! Mad respect to the people painting their clothes for this contest.
32) Bake until golden brown
Seriously, clever and hilarious. How are you supposed to recreate so many of these shapes from Klimt!? Well, with baked goods of course! Nothing more gold and swirly than a perfectly baked cinnamon roll! I just hope they still ate all that food, grocery stores aren’t exactly stocked full right now…
33) Brave harp
You know when you just look so much like a painting that you’re itching for a chance to recreate it and show the world how perfect you are to portray it? Yeah, me neither. Shan Millan does not share that feeling with us however, since she looks straight up perfect for this recreation and even had a harp lying around I guess!
34) Another animal painting
Well… Not quite. An animal, yes, but… A balloon animal. I’m really not sure what possessed this person to recreate this piece exactly, nor am I quite sure of how they’re breathing in there, all I know is that it makes me wildly uncomfortable. Get out of there!
35) Get by with a little help
A nigh perfect recreation with a little digital touching up to give it that extra painted feeling! It’s very well done, and their wardrobes are perfect! I really love this one. The only thing I’m left wondering is what they actually have in the basket! Is it heavy?
36) 70 going on 7
Another great entry from Alex Woollard! This little girl is a natural born model. She has somehow totally captured the solemn look of the original subject in the painting. The wardrobe is of course on point as well. Alex must really be an art connoiseur!
37) Creepy platter
A very clever, hilarious and slightly creepy recreation! Pretty genius way of getting the “decapitated” effect, having buddy wear all black and blend into the darkness! This is one of those rare times when it pays to have a significant other that bears a striking resemblance to Jesus.
38) Brick by brick
Really cute to see LEGO jumping in and taking part of the challenge as well! They’re even making their recreations extremely accurate! Of course, they also choose the paintings with the most famously straight lines in the world!
39) I don’t think that mask is very effective
A quick and fun, easy recreation! This is the contest in a nutshell, and it’s perfect for art lovers! Plenty of people wouldn’t be familiar with the original piece, so it’s cool to see people showing off their favourites while bringing them to life! Just don’t wear that out as COVID protection!
40) Monkey business
Leave it to Frida to be surrounded by wild animals (and possibly a tiny orange man???) and look just completely uninterested. I love her. And I love this entry! The model even went the extra mile and gave herself a moustache and unibrow. I mean, it’s kind of the only option if you’re going to cover Kahlo!
41) Buy apple stalks
Very nicely done! A very faithful reimaging of the famous piece by Magritte, The Human Condition. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that this piece gives me the creeps for some unknown reason, but I think I love it even more for that!
42) STAY AT HOME
This is fantastic in all the weirdest ways. What happened to the other guy? What is that moustache made of? Why do you look so concerned? Why is that blanket wrapped around you? The queue card is also a nice touch.
43) It’s rude to prod someone’s wound without permission
Honestly, the recreation is no weirder than the original. Imagine your friend Jesus coming back after three days of thinking he’s dead, and he’s like “yo check this gnarly gap in my flesh,” and your first instinct IS TO STICK YOUR FINGER IN IT!?
44) Andy Warhol on Xanax
This is probably the best one, honestly. (Except the last one which is objectively the best and also my favourite) It’s the one that comes closest to art all on it’s own. It actually really is making a statement, and it’s rife with social commentary! Although it may not have been meant that way and it might really just be a joke. That’s art, baby!
45) Imitating an alien
Respect to this guy for recreating such a haunting image! I have no idea what’s going on with your monocle there but I respect the inventiveness! Even more respect for doing this in the colder months of the year. On a separate note, why on earth is the original image so clearly a horrifying alien trying to masquerade as a modern day hipster!? Do you see the size of those hands!?
46) Garlic breath
Now that’s what I call a solution to not having a sultan’s turban just lying around during quarantine! It’s all about perspective. This is why it’s helpful to have red satin cloth stuffed in the back of a closet, just in case Getty Museum offers up a classical art recreation challenge.
47) Art you can eat
I’ve always wanted to eat a cake brick with differently shaped and coloured squares inside it, and these guys are living my dream! If there was ever a time and a way to adapt Mondrian’s art, now and cake are my favourite.
48) Where did that Van Gogh?
If you were really dedicated to doing your best in this challenge, you’d cut your ear off and send it to your lover. But since you’ve covered it with a bandage I’ll never know if you did or not. We also thank you for not smoking indoors! Although I don’t think that was ever really a concern anyway considering your pipe looks like a pencil stabbing maybe a champagne cork?
49) You hold the world in the palm of your hand
Part of me has to wonder if this was this guy’s natural set up and he simply saw his opportunity and struck. His recreation of the work is fantastic, but it’s also different enough that it seems like most of these objects were already in the vicinity to begin with. He may really have just tossed a blanket on his table and a Kangol hat on.
50) Paper flowers
Toilet paper flowers, to be exact. This is both spot on and hilarious! The wardrobe, makeup and setting are all spot on, the flowers are changed to be a bit more topical! Exactly the kind of toilet paper humour I was hoping to see out of this contest.
51) Clothes change, dogs stay the same
Very nicely done on this one. A creative use of fabrics makes it easy to replicate the look of this simple masterpiece! A cute white fluff with eyes and nose brings the whole scene together.
52) Quarantine eyes
We’re about to find out just how many people look like this guy from 1433 CE. Part of me believes this guy is just a natural chameleon and everyone looks like him at least a little bit, even today. Regardless, the recreation of his portrait is pretty hilarious. The model just so clearly doesn’t want to be there, and he’s clearly pretty done with isolation. Tired eyes, my friend!
53) Told you so
Another! Think we’re done? We’ll see. (Spoilers: only kinda) At least this model looks a little more like she wants to be there for this one, although arguably, the “get away from me” eyes served the reimagining a little better!
54) Same same but different
Not the same as our boy from 1433, but oddly similar. What was the trend about for red head coverings? I’m honestly not even mad about it, it just doesn’t seem entirely… practical. But our modern friend did a great job recapturing the likeness, and in a clever way to boot! I’m pretty sure that’s a paper lantern on his head.
55) Easier cleanup, today
People really haven’t changed all that much I guess. The big difference is that the modern picture doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to own, and we can get rid of it without much guilt in the span of about fifteen seconds. Not washing any ceramic today! Why you’d use paper plates in quarantine though, I’m sure I don’t know.
56) What to do with no birds
Genius! No stuffed animals? But surely a collection of wild animals because it’s a Kahlo painting? Simply grab some objects with a similar colour scheme and theme and make do! But come on, girl, it’s quarantine, surely you could have just grown a unibrow and ‘stache out a bit! Where’s your love for art?
57) Eclaire cherub
I don’t know why I’m reminded of eclaires when I look at this HYSTERICAL photo, but I am, and now I want one. Renaissance painting of infants were so strange, I don’t understand them one bit. Is the subject even a child or an old nun!? Art is so strange, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. Fantastic job recreating the costume with modern materials!
58) Squint and you can see it
Not every post was made to capture the essence of the painting perfectly! In this case, you have to squint really hard to make the pictures look the same. But that’s okay, the challenge was indeed to make these scenes with what you had lying around and you did exactly that! No one is expecting you to own a hundred tiny french flags.
59) Expectation vs. reality
What a fantastic job! How this mum is managing to one arm hold both baby and dog is a skill only parents have. I won’t ask about how the virgin mary is doing it with a full lamb because I’m pretty sure she had some magical parenting powers of some kind, right? On another note, that baby’s expression is one of the funniest things I’ve seen today!
60) Two moods of isolation
The wardrobe aside, although it is perfect, these two ladies express something completely different from each other with those faces. And yet, they do share a common theme. Both have a face we’ve all been making throughout this quarantine. These two pictures together really capture the highs and lows. The “I’m so bored someone please talk to me” and the “don’t even look at me right now” face.
61) Unicorns have permanent crowns
How these dads managed to keep those “halos” balanced on their backs, I’ll never know. I can only assume they had a clever method for strapping them down. Besides that, I love the unicorn headbands being this recreation’s version of crowns! It’s somehow so perfect while being utterly ridiculous, and the dad on the right’s face captures it perfectly.
62) When a potatoe sees how fries are made
I always thought The Scream looked a little weird and alien, but now I realise it’s because they look like they have a potatoe for a head. Thanks, Buzzkill_13 for opening my eyes to this fact. Seriosuly, this is a really clever way. I have to wonder whether they already had the idea and went ahead to carve a potato out to suit the idea or if they realised while carving potatoes that one just so happened to have the face.
63) Fluff’s a fluff
Some people have opted to go with the recogniseable poses and not go too far with that extra mile to make their entry, and they’re still turning out great! This recreation of a piece from da Vinci features a dog instead a big ol’ Ermine, and it still gets the exact right point across! Look at that face!
64) Squash that nose
Who has the time or motivation to craft a big prosthetic for an internet contest? Simply do what this guy did and cut the top off what looks like maybe a squash to create the same effect! Bonus points if you have a room with pinkish purple walls and ceiling! I really shouldn’t find this as funny as I do but oh my do I ever!
65) Guitart hero
Honestly this one is super impressive to me. It seems like the recreator is seeins something in the original that I can’t see! They saw all the shapes and objects those shapes created… Whereas I just saw the lines and colours. Even if this is meant to be more funny than anything, I think they’re really onto something, and maybe understand Kandinsky better than I ever could!
66) Warmth of the sun
A fantastic adaptation! Both capture the same relaxed feeling, and it seems like the model in the recreation very well could have been the model for the painting as well! They both have a certain dream quality to their eyes that lends itself really nicely to the overall image.
67) Sit flip
This is about as perfect as it gets! Even better when you flip the genders and ages! Rather than two old men, why not feature two young women? Otherwise, they have the books, the fruit bowl, the mystery object in front of it, the poses… All they’re really missing is the shutter behind them, and who can begrudge them that?
68) Hungry eyes
I love these two in contrast to each other and obviously yes, it is because there are dogs in them. But it is partly to do with how desparate both dogs are to get their jaws wrapped around these delicious morsels! That little pug is just a little more brave and curious than our rather beefy friend (who probably knows better than to grab off the table) and is mere inches from the food! Adorable, hilarious, 10/10.
69) Which came first?
This is an insanely spot on adaptation. If you didn’t know any better you’d have to ask yourself if the original was simply a painting that used the photograph as a reference. Another case of “I was born for this exact challenge using this exact painting!”
70) Gazing longingly outside
Well isn’t this topical? Yes, the entry is a fantastic rendition of the original, no doubt! But this is also the perfect piece to recreate for this time of human history. A young woman gazing outside longingly? That’s every single one of us right now! Looking outside just wishing for this quarantine to end!
71) Maximum effort
This creator went all in! They went to painstaking efforts to recreate every aspect of the original painting as perfectly as possible! Really incredibly done! The background looks like an exact match and that outfit was obviously made with incredible attention to detail! Of course the makeup is ridiculously impressive as well, extending past the face and even covering the hands to get it just right!
72) Chewie?
Man, art was weird. I know I’ve already mentioned that a couple times but a piece like this just really makes you remember, you know? What was it even about!? Regardless I’m SO happy it exists because now we get a hilarious recreation like this. I love everything about it. Honestly, impeccable work on the hair to get it just right and still very hilarious, and then stuffing oranges into the shirt just takes it to that next level of hilarity. Full marks!
73) One last TP
One last hurrah for the TP jokes. And what a usage! I mean honestly, it’s a pretty fantastic job he’s done to mimic the original, but using the toilet paper roll as a neck frill just really tickles a certain fancy that’s really only applicable in this challenge! I have no idea how he had the rest of this on hand, but one can only assume there is a great costume hiding in there for future parties.
74) Snake charmed
You thought we were done with Klimt? No way! He was certainly a popular artist to use in this challenge, but his paintings present a unique challenge on their own to try and recreate! And what a job she’s done in this one! The costume and hair are fantastic but then using what seems to be electrical cable instead of a snake was pretty ingenius!
75) Ceci n’est pas le fin
They say you should save the best for last and that’s exactly what I’ve done! This is by far my favourite of all the entries I’ve found. It actually made me take a break from work while I had a laughing fit. What isn’t perfect about this photo? Everything is just fantastic but this guy’s face is just too much. It’s almost as if he’s more horrified with what he’s doing than we are! I don’t think those poor, stretched leggings will ever be the same.
A wild ride from start to end! People really went all in sometimes while recreating their favourite artworks with what they could! Thanks for keeping the world entertained for a while longe ryet, Getty Museum! You really know how to get people channeling that creative spark, and I for one hope you make this a yearly contest! It will get even crazier once people are able to go shopping again! We hope this has helped alleviate the isolation sadness somewhat, and maybe even inspired you to recreate your own piece of art!
