When you thought you have seen everything there was in terms of modern and a bit abstract performances, something new comes to surprise you even more.
Of course, this is probably related to an immensely talented and imaginative choreographer and a dance crew willing to test their creativity limitations.

Our story is about a performance like no other, it’s highly unlikely that you have ever seen anything similar before. And, what is even more amazing is that in all its “weirdness”, it looks really delightful to be part of!

Back in 2010, the Beyer High gave a production that people still reminisce about. It is the famous Bag Dance production that as the name literally implies, you see “bags” dancing around.

Someone could directly come and challenge this absurd concept, but this is exactly what happened. The students participating in the performance were inside colorful stretchy body bags that covered them from head to toes, making you wonder how they were even able to see or breathe.

Maybe nowadays, this kind of costume would be quite popular as with the COVID-19 and the necessary protection gear, aka the masks, we have to wear, this kind of close-distance dancing would be only possible due to these costumes.

The music starts, the crew starts dancing and the audience cannot hold its laughter and it’s completely understandable as the dancers are so hilarious, dancing in their colorful body bags. They do resemble little “ghost” figures but there aren’t a bit scary. On the contrary, they are just delightful!

It’s really a mesmerizing performance and you can realize that they had probably spent many hours practicing in order to achieve this kind of synchronization. Their choreography was executed nearly flawlessly. These kids had put on some really great dance moves despite the movement-restriction that one would assume they had because of their unconventional costumes.

The audience literally loses its composure and starts laughing, when the students do the “hammer slide”. It’s really an innovative performance as the talented choreographer was aiming that his dancers would be perceived rather than people as shapes. And, he was obviously quite successful by the variety of the different moves and styles the crew was able to perform.

The video was posted on YouTube and immediately people rushed to comment on it. Nearly half a million people have viewed this video since 2010. One wrote, ” I was having a horrible day. Well, this completely made me feel better:) thank you!! And this is majorly creative! Fabulous job :D”, and this is exactly why art can be so important on so many different levels. It’s not only when the artist expresses himself/ herself through their art but it’s also the impact they have on their audience.

Watching these colorful body bags spring around the stage, jumping up and down, rolling all over, is really what makes this performance unique and refreshingly fun! Undoubtedly, the people present on that day will remember this show for the rest of their lives.
