Here’s a question: Do animals like music?! We all just really want to know whether our dogs, cats, and birds enjoy listening to Led Zeppelin (or whatever your musical preference is)! Maybe this video will let us know for sure…
Drew Cole released a video of him playing guitar for his dog and it’s quite telling!
Drew Cole is a contestant from The Voice and has had quite a successful music career! Of anyone who could tell if their dog likes music, it would be Drew, right? As we see in his YouTube clip, it seems pretty clear!

The video starts with a close-up of a dog (and maybe a Bud Light advertisement?)
The adorable pup in frame is named Bailey and he seems to be a little upset! Apparently, Bailey loves music and when it isn’t playing, he gets a little disappointed. As we can see in the video, it isn’t just a coincidence, either!
As soon as Drew starts playing, Bailey’s face changes.
Can dogs smile? Well, if they are listening to music they can! As soon as the strings start humming on the guitar Baily’s face immediately lifts and his droopy mouth picks up to form a bit of a doggy smile. You can’t make this stuff up!
When the music stops again, he resumes his sad face.
RBF is a phrase used for people whose resting face is a bit, well, mean-looking. You can say that someone has an “RBF” and it means that their normal face isn’t inviting or warm. For Bailey, he has an RSF, a Resting Sad Face!
As soon as the music stops, the RDF comes out.
Like clockwork, when Drew pauses on the music, the reaction from Bailey is instant. The first few times could have been staged, but reacting in the same way over and over again according to music seems to be Bailey’s real reaction and not a fake one.
The AKC has even released a statement on this exact phenomenon.
Family Dog columnist Stanley Coren broached this topic a few years ago, when he reported on research by psychologist Deborah Wells of Queens University in Belfast for a Psychology Today article. Wells examined dogs’ reactions to hearing modern pop music, classical music, and heavy metal while living in a shelter environment. She found that they might actually enjoy the music—depending on what kind it is. – AKC
So direct from the AKC, dogs DO like to listen to music, as long as it’s the right kind. Our guess is that dogs end up liking the kinds of music that their owners do – it only makes sense! What kind of music would Drew Cole’s dog like? His own!
The rest of the video shows Drew stopping and starting and Bailey responding in kind.

We love this and it just goes to show that dogs are so much smarter than we give them credit for lots of the time. Maybe the next time your dog is a bit scared or nervous you can just pop on some classical music and help calm them down!
