Narwhal: a kind of whale that possesses a large “tusk” from a protruding canine tooth. No wonder this was the name given to a puppy, who was rescued at 10 months old and had an extra tail on its forehead.
Mac’s Mission, an organization run by Rochelle Steffen, rescued the puppy a few days ago. They took care of him and took him to the vet to find out what the extra tail was connected to and whether this would cause problems or disabilities for the dog in the future.
According to the vet, who gave the puppy an X-ray, all the exams confirmed that the unicorn part, also known as the front tail, is not connected to anything and it doesn’t wag, although we’d much love to see a forehead tail wagging. However, the doctors deem necessary to keep Narwhal for a little longer to find out what implications or complications this condition might have in the future and to make sure the puppy is healthy to adopt. That’s why Narwhal is not yet available for adoption.
Narwhal was one of the lucky ones. According to BBC news, hundreds of puppies are abandoned in rural Missouri. Mac’s Mission found and picked him up, just like they do with other dogs, especially the ones that have special needs, such as deformities, trauma or “anything major” really, which would otherwise be put down. For instance, they have previously cared for a dog with five legs, a three-legged dachshund, blind and deaf animals, as well as dogs with cleft palates and mange.
“Everybody has said that it looks like a tail that just didn’t develop fully, like he might have tried to absorb a twin and it just didn’t work all the way.” said Ms Steffen.
Narwhal has gone viral on Facebook after a post by Mac’s Mission and has been loved by the public. Most of them commented on how wonderful the front tail is and suggested they didn’t remove it, as it is what makes this puppy so special and adorable. However, there have been others who support the removal of the tail, since, as they say, it will eventually grow and start bothering him. One follower joked: “It appears they assembled the puppy wrong. Always follow the directions, people!”
Among other comments, there were some that suggested Narwhal shouldn’t be given for adoption, but be kept by the organization and used as a therapy dog. For instance, one user wrote:
“So many want him cause he’s cute and different. But I think you should keep him and use him as a therapy dog to teach kids and others to accept the differences we see in others. That being different and unique isn’t a bad thing.”
Whether the puppy is given for adoption or not, what is important is that he’s not abandoned and lonely anymore. He has people around him who care for him and want to see him grow into a happy dog. He’s also an example to all of us that just because you’re different doesn’t mean you’re inferior- you’re just cooler!
