In a world where far too many people only seem to care about themselves there are some truly outstanding people.
In a world that seems to be full of hate there are still some people who will go to extreme lengths to help strangers.
These examples are supposed to make you smile but let me warn you. If you are anything like me, chances are you’re going to spend the next few minutes sobbing, not smiling. However, your faith in the human race may be restored—at least to some extent.
And maybe, as you look at these, ask yourself what you would have done.
1. Anthony Borges
Anthony is 15. During a mass shooting at his Florida school, he held a classroom door closed with his body. In doing so he protected 20 of his fellow students. He was hit 5 times and underwent 9 surgeries.
2. Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua
He spends hours every day taking water to animals affected by the drought in Kenya. He started doing this at his own expense.
3. Brian Birkett
This gentleman is a retiree on a pension. He volunteers for a organization called A Lending Hand, and every Monday night he makes 50 tubs of curry for homeless people in Dublin.
4. Nogales, Sonora
This blaze broke out at the Hotel San Enrique in Mexico, just across the U.S./Mexico border. Politics were forgotten in this international effort to douse the fire.
5. A helping hand
The woman in this picture noticed the younger man struggling to tie his tie. She asked her husband to assist, which he did. He also made sure the younger man would be able to do it on his own in the future.
6. Recognition
I think if you make it to 100 years of age, there better be one heck of a party. If you live in Barbados, you also get a stamp in your honor.
7. 600 men
A middle school in Dallas was hosting a Breakfast with Dads event in hopes of encouraging fathers to engage with their students. But many students didn’t have a father—or even a father figure. The principal put out a call on her Facebook page, hoping to get around 50 male friends to volunteer. She made the post public and 600 men showed up.
8. What a man
You might wonder why these birds are in the shape of a heart. Because someone’s husband gets up every morning and places bird seed in this pattern. This is what she sees when she looks out the window to her yard.
9. Baily and her nurse
Baily was completely paralyzed from the waist down without any explanation. It lasted 11 days. This is the reaction of one of her favorite nurses when she started walking again.
10. Catching up on her reading
This old lady heads to the book section in the supermarket on a regular basis. So she can read the books. The manager has put out a bench for her.
11. Jeni Stepien
Jeni’s dad was murdered, and his heart donated to another man so that he might live. When Jeni married 10 years later, she asked that man to walk her down the aisle.
12. North West London
This man was about to jump 30 feet to sure death. If not from the fall itself, then the rush hour traffic below. Strangers rushed to help.
13. A request
When this note was slipped under the door of someone practicing their violin, they expected a complaint about the noise. They opened the windows and played the request. When finished, they listened to the sound of clapping from a view floors above.
14. So caring
Just look at the way he cups that bird in his hand. He’d apparently just found this injured sparrow and immediately began looking for vet services.
15. They do see you
I know some people like janitors feel they are invisible. They work hard in the background, and nobody really notices them. This school janitor is a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan who was devasted he couldn’t go to their concert because he couldn’t afford the tickets. The students pooled money and bought the tickets for him.
16. Aesha Ash
This dancer with the NYC Ballet spends some of her time inspiring you children and crushing stereotypes about women of color. For much of her time with the ballet, she was the only African-American ballerina in the company.
17. Going the extra mile
And elderly man had a heart attack while shoveling his driveway. The paramedics who responded took him to the hospital than came back and finished shoveling for him.
18. Ashley Jiron
Ashley, the owner of P.B. Jams in Oklahoma noticed someone had been rummaging through the dumpster looking for food. This was her response.
19. Alex Assali
Alex is a Syrian refuge living in Berlin. Once a week he sets up a food stand where he hands out a warm meal to the city’s homeless. He does this so he can “give something back to the people who helped us.”
20. Feel the love
This young man is hard of hearing. A very thoughtful mariachi musician let him rest his head against his guitar so that he could hear the music.
21. Godfrey Coutto
What would you do if a stranger with special needs approached you on the bus, took your hand, and didn’t let go? 21-year-old Coutto says, I was obviously freaked out but I tried to understand his position.”
22. Shaedon Wedel
18-year-old Shaedon asked 15-year-old Carlie—how has Down syndrome—to be his date to prom. He and her older brother are friends, and he says he feels like part of her family. He wanted to do something to make her feel special. And apparently, she loves Doritos.
23. Cold hands, warm heart
He asked for 10 volunteers. He had 65 people from 40 different communities show up to offer help.
24. No Leftovers
At the end of each day this coffee shop leaves something behind. Any burritos that were left over are put out for the homeless.
25. Mr. Rogers
At some point during his show he began saying that he was feeding the fish while doing so. A blind girl had written the show and expressed concerned for the fish he’d said he had. She worried they weren’t being fed. So from then on he let her know when he was feeding them.
26. The Giving Tree
An 8th grade glass took and angle off their giving tree. A little girl was asking for a bike and clothes. The class resolved to give $2 each for clothes, but they couldn’t afford more for a bike. Then one student showed up at school with this.
27. Mrs. Posey
She is 112 years old and in a nursing home. And since she has outlived her siblings, children, and grandchildren, she is alone and hasn’t had a visitor in 3 years. This woman baked her cookies and paid a visit. Maybe this inspired others to visit her too.
28. Joe Thomas
Joe works at an IHOP in Springfield, Ill. He regularly helps feed a disabled lady so her husband can eat a warm meal.
29. Dads will be dads
This dad is a college professor. When the babysitter of one of his students didn’t show up one day, she brought the baby to class. When the baby got fussy, he did what a good dad would do. The baby spent the rest of the class with him—quite content.
30. Take what you need
Every year, an old man in this town decorates his tree this way. Clothing, shoes, and other useful items to those in need.
31. Rick van Beek
This Michigan dad did a triathlon with his 13-year-old daughter Madison. She has cerebral palsy. He pulls her in a kayak during swim, in cart during the bike portion, and pushes her wheelchair for the run.
32. Graeme Cooper
This paramedic helped fulfil the dying wish a patient. She was being transported to a palliative care unit when she expressed a desire to just be at the beach. The crew gave her her wish.
33. Big brothers
There is nothing in the world like a big brother. I know, I have one.
34. If only
We seem to live in a world where most people have forgotten the basics of manners and being polite. Here’s a little girl setting a good example, even when in a scary situation.
35. Always be kind
You never know what people are going through. This coffee shop got this letter of thanks from a customer.
36. Just another pool, right?
Wrong. 94-year-old Keith Davidson was lonely after losing his wife of 66 years. He built a pool for the neighborhood kids. Not so lonely now!
37. Dear Daddy
This is a note hanging on the steering column of a taxicab. Imagine how much that thought helps get him through the day.
38. David Deutchman
For 12 years he has been visiting the neonatal intensive care unit of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Twice a week he goes to comfort and hold the babies.
39. Spencer Sleyon
This 22-year-old rapper formed a deep friendship with 81-year-old Rosalind Guttman while playing Words with Friends. 300 matches later he travelled to Florida to meet her.
40. Bill Murray
At a bluegrass concert in Charleston, SC, Bill bough every remaining ticket and handed them out to people waiting in line. I hope they paid it forward at some point.
41. Jonathan Smith
He saved 30 people during the Vegas shooting. Even though it meant eventually getting shot himself.
42. Such a simple thing
Have you ever tripped over a raised sidewalk? Someone put bright tape down to save people from doing so.

Young Cameron approached a news truck and asked if they could report his smile. They were happy to do so!
44. Relief from the heat
These young girls waited for the garbage men so they could give them ice cold drinks. It was 103 degrees out.
45. College Athlete Cameron Lyle
A month before he was to compete in the final track and field championships, he got a call. In high school he registered as a bone marrow donor. He gave up his chance for a medal and had the surgery. Priorities.
46. So sweet
A 30th anniversary to remember! Jeff surprised Pam with a park bench dedicated to her at the park where they go for walks.
47. Supporting baby
This young baby has to wear a head-shaping helmet. His dad has the whole family wearing a helmet in support.
48. Letting children be children
These boys are Syrian refugees. They are now in Hungary where volunteers have provided them with a chance to be kids. Watching Tom and Jerry.
49. Precious moments
You never know when you could be a part of something special. Revel in it when you are.
50. Bagel Jesus
When his shift ends at the café he works at his work is not done. He takes bagels that will be disposed of and hands them out the hungry on the street.
51. A stranger in need
This woman was looking for a generator at Lowe’s, but they were out of stock. She needed one for her father who is living on oxygen. This man gave her his.
52. Tatertot
Someone loves their daddy. And is concerned about their daddy’s comfort. It’s pretty easy to tell when parents are doing a good job.
53. Superheroes indeed
These kids who are in the Children’s Hospital of Colorado got a nice surprise. The Aurora Police Strategic Response Team rappelled down from the roof dressed as superheroes.
54. One of the great ones
There are some teachers that really do care about their students. This one surprised her class with personalized messages to motivate them before an exam.
55. Thoughtful
Someone left their car window open and it began to rain. Someone else tried to alert them and when that failed, covered the window for them.
56. Making someone’s day
Liam Murphy took a taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to visit Ferrari world. The taxi driver, who had lived there 14 years, had never been. He had planned to sit and wait in the parking lot, but Liam invited him along for the fun.
57. Aww
A man told his little daughter he was short on money that week. He laid down for a nap, and when he got up this is what awaited him.
58. Offering support
These seniors have a generous spirit. Every year they make 1000 toy tops to donate to their local Ronald McDonald House.
59. Share the awe
I imagine there are a lot of people who have never seen through the eye of a telescope. This man set one up in front of Walmart and didn’t keep it to himself.
60. Simple acts of kindness
Zack, who is a special needs student at Penn State wanted to do something for his favorite football player on the team. He’d injured his knee, so Zack gave him cookies, a note, and a hug. And it looks like they were graciously received!
61. Tulsa County Deputy
This deputy noticed a woman who didn’t own a pair of shoes. So he took her shopping and let her pick out a new pair for herself.
62. Surgery for 2
9-year-old Joshua was headed in for surgery. The stuffed wolf he had with him had a tear in its leg and he asked his doctor if he could do some wolf surgery too. Both boy and wolf were well looked after.
63. Remarkable
You always hear about the horrible landlords. After her husband had surgery for his cancer, a woman found this card and their cancelled rent check in their mailbox.
64. The innocence of a child
This little girl is offering water to these officers during a protest in Bosnia. No aggression. No hatred. Just a kind deed.
65. To the rescue
This woman’s dog was picked up by the wind and thrown into ocean. A complete stranger jumped into the rough waters to save it.
66. Neighborly states
When crops across Kansas, Oklahoma, And South Dakota were burned by fire, farmers from Michigan sent bales of hay to help out. And they weren’t the only state to help.
67. Daddy’s girl
This young lady is disabled. Her father escorted her to her senior prom. She looks delighted!
68. Is this a dying art?
It seems there are a lot of young men who have never been taught how to do up a tie. This one desperately tried to do his until a stranger stepped in to lend a hand.
69. Edmonton, Alberta
This Canadian restaurant welcomes those who can’t pay. They even offer a free meal menu for the hungry.
70. It begins at home
Parents left this note as the kids prepared to go back to school in the fall. Imagine if everyone had and followed instructions like this.
71. Always by your side
What hospital policy? When her husband had to spend a week in hospital due to a hemorrhage in his brain stem, this woman made sure she remained at his side.
72. Let me help
This young man didn’t run for cover when caught in a hailstorm. He went to help this old man get across the street by lending some shelter.
73. It will be cheaper
This Pizza Hut employee is helping this senior get a better deal. To do so, she is teaching her how to order online.
74. Lost and found
No identity theft here. When someone found this guy’s ID they mailed it to him.
75. Charity begins at home
A young, pregnant couple found this on their door one night when coming to check on this house after Hurricane Sandy. No contact info or name, just a random act of kindness.
