Each era is known for their own fashion trends. The 1970s had some especially mind-boggling looks. Perhaps the craziest ones her the his and her sets… So we thought we’d put a couple of those together so that you can have a good laugh!
1. Paisley everything
Give me paisley everything or nothing at all… No, but seriously. This couple really went all out with the dated pattern. At least it’s still sort of cute with the bikini and robe?
2. Matching slacks with matching belts
Anything cuter than these matching striped slacks and long belts? Well, maybe… This was clearly an ad. We bet they sold a lot!
3. The before or after anything suit
What does that even mean? Before or after… what? Are they saying you can do anything in these matching jumpsuits? I mean, we believe it!

4. Performers
Are these two performers? With the feather hat and dramatic black-and-white overalls, we can’t help but think so.
5. Striped overalls
Okay, these are pretty cute. The thin-striped overalls over the denim button downs?! Can’t say it’s not youthful and adorable.
6. Patons Promise
Oh boy, these matching orange sweaters. Where do we begin? Should we talk about how the man isn’t wearing pants?
7. Embrace your femme side
This dude is most certainly embracing his femme side with this one. Mostly because of those strappy heels. What are they supposed to be? Yellow submarines?
8. Fun fare
Now THESE are some outfits. With the hats, boots, crazy patterns, and vests. It’s like someone took every crazy thing they can think of and put it all together in one (or two) outfit(s).
9. Make it rustic
Rustic it sure is, with these flannel shirts. The belts and demin definitely help too. Looks like they’re ready to go camping in autumn!
10. Swimwear
Aren’t you glad we’re not swimming in the 70s after seeing this? There’s so many matching, colorful stripes we might go blind. The tight tank tops don’t help either.
11. Double date, anyone?
It’s perfect, you and your partner can wear matching star shirts and vests. Your friend and their partner can wear matching overalls. Fashion heaven.
12. Matching top/bottom combo
More double date action! Nothing beats a pair of matching slacks — whether they’re solid black or plaid — and matching sweaters or button downs. Too dang cute.
13. Loungewear
A long striped shirt-dress? You can both wear it. A silk robe? You can both wear it. Even a dress? Oh yeah, it’s a skirt for the man.
14. Matching stripes for everyone
Whole groups of friends could match back in the 70s! Not only were these striped patterns blinding, but the sweat-like material also looked way too cozy.
15. Matching vests
Vest were all the rage in the 70s. But this crochet one? Sure, it’s feminine, but that doesn’t mean your boyfriend can’t wear it!
16. Matching sweaters
Fasion lovers were cozy in the 70s. Sweaters-galore. Made perfect sense for cuffing season.
17. Matching top and jeans
Not even sure what kind of pattern is on these shirts, but safe to say it’s loud and blinding. And paired with the denim bell bottoms? Yeah, that is so 70s.
18. Suited up
If you and your partner had a meeting in the 70s, this is what you would wear. No question about it. There’s no way to show you’re serious than with matching suits.
19. Matching on matching
There’s two couples here, and while each of them are wearing matching stripes, they’re slightly different. One set is made of a more denim material and layered over a puffy shirt while the other is a slightly more western take, with hats and all.
20. Loungewear
…And sleepwear! Wow, so cozy. With these outfits, these couples are sure to have a relaxing — and fashionable — night of sleep.
21. White on white
Who cares if it’s after Labor Day or not? This couple is straight killin’ it with their white-on-white outfits. And the rainbow belt? Talk about extra.
22. Minty vests
The 70s really loved a sweater vest, didn’t they? Nothing says love like these two matching vests, that’s for sure.
23. Athletic-style jackets
Aw, imagine seeing a couple walking around in the park and holding hands while donning these matching jackets? Nothing but adorable, plus oh-so-spirited with this American design!
24. Stripes on denim
Are you noticing a pattern yet? Besides vests, people of the 70s really enjoyed two other things: stripes and denim.
25. Cuffing season
Cold weather? No problem for couples in the 70s. They probably had coordinating sweaters for that.
26. We’re not done with matching sweaters…
Here’s some more. You are welcome.
27. Sweater vest love
And when it’s not quite cold enough for a full on sweater, break out the patterned sweater vests! They are still super festive. You can even layer them over matching shirts, wow.
28. Leopard everything
For when you are in the mood to be covered in leopard head-to-toe. I mean, who isn’t every now and then? It’s even better when it’s made of smooth silk and your partner is wearing the exact same one.
29. Pre-washed denim
This is taking the Canadian tuxedo to the next level. Like we said, people of the 70s sure did love their denim. And floral button downs!
30. Lined underwear
In case you weren’t sure if it was too far for couples to wear matching lined underwear, the 70s have an answer for you. They think it’s great.
31. True hippies
Remember these hippie ponchos? It seems like they briefly came back in fashion just a couple years ago but then went away again. Rightfully so.
32. More matching sweaters
We told you, 70s couples love their matching sweaters! You know what makes it even sweeter? A matching belt.
33. Leather trenchcoat
If you and your partner every had to venture out in the rain or solve crimes in the 70s, you would probably throw this on. A leather trenchcoat is an absolute necessity in the closet. Especially when paired with plaid or stripes.
34. The gang’s all here
You bet groups of friends looked like this a few decades ago. Matching bell bettoms all around.
35. More matching button downs
What makes a button down even better? Having a second one nearby, preferably on your partner. Also patterned chest pockets.
36. Brown on brown
This is one of the more classier looks perhaps! The man is wearing a soft brown coat while the woman matches with a brown top. We dig it.
37. Jumpsuits
Are these jumpsuits silver? Maybe. And everyone has one.
38. Hoods
Oh yeah, people wore hoodies in the 70s, too. Of course, they had a much more hippie-vibe to them. You know, with the patterns and materials and such.
39. Never enough matching sweaters
Here are some more matching sweaters, because we know you wanted them! These looks slightly more spring-appropriate in comparison to the others, with big flower patterns.
40. Sweater vests
It seems as though there was a sweater vest for every mood you were in back then. Happy? There’s sweaters with birds and suns. Ready for bed? There’s sweaters with the moon at night.
41. Pajamas
Are these not the most fashionable PJs you’ve ever laid your eyes on? Robe belt and all!
42. More. Matching. Sweaters.
These 70s peeps loved their sweaters. After seeing so many, we think they might be finally growing on us, too. These aren’t bad.
43. Enough denim?
If you said that to one of these guys, they would probably say no. Not enough denim. Ever, apparently.
44. Denim denim denim
Oh, you thought we were done with the denim content? That’s cute. We’re not.
45. Jumpsuit
Perhaps the best part of this jumpsuit is the removable leg. If you feel like showing those knees, you can actually zip off the leg and turn it into shorts.
46. “Terry turn-ons”
These matching jumpsuits are made out of terry, for ultimate form-fitting comfort. It also comes hooded or not hooded. 70s people loved options!
47. His and… His
Lined underwear for men looked a little something like this. At least it’s nice they weren’t afraid to embrace their bodies with these form-fitting pieces.
48. Trimmed denim
More denim on denim, this time with visible stitching. It’s also clear that people back in the old days loved their western styles!
49. Boys’ day out
Guys wanna go out for lunch or a round of golf? They put on these classy white get-ups, with matching pastel plaid patterns. And yes, of course it’s a wide leg.
50. Colorful friends
People loved vibrant color in the 70s. According to this photo, at least.
51. Hot pants
Knit or crochet was very in style in the 70s, too.
52. Matching sweater vests
Matching sweater vests were for guy friends too! That, along with matching colored pants, and you’ve got yourself an iconic 70s look.
53. Best of the vests
Like father like son…?
54. Matching…Whatever pattern this is
At first glance it looks like paisley, but then you’re not sure. It’s a crazy pattern though, and it’s, naturally, mixed with a denim shirt and western-style vest. Classic.
55. Out on the town
Yes, a majority of these looks are western-style, but 70s people also knew how to get glitzy for a night out on the town. Bell bottom pants and jumpsuits but cover it in sequins and pink silk!
56. Sweater/necklace combo
Nothing says 70s like this sweater and necklace combination. During that time, people loved a good statement piece. Extra points if you make the sweater a turtleneck.
57. Feminine men
One thing we know for sure is that men weren’t afraid to embrace their femme sides in the 70s! Fur coats and cinched waistlines? Sign ’em up.
58. Dramatic prints
It’s no secret that dramatic prints were a big trend back in the old days. Floral, stripes, or a mix of floral and stripes… You name it. The crazier/more blinding, the better.
59. Sweater vest crew
This whole crew is donning sweater vests and plaid. All of these things for days, please!
60. Denim-denim-denim
It only makes sense to end this with some more denim. If there’s anything w learned today, it’s that back in the 70s, people really enjoyed denim. And patterns. And sweater vests. Nice!
Can you feel the nostalgic yet?
