120,000 Ribbons make a beautiful display where the Berlin wall once stood 30 years ago
In a time when walls are being built, this wall is being remembered.

It is sometimes sad to see the world right now, where walls are being viciously built and people are being torn apart. However, through all of the negative things, there is always still a glimmer of uplifting hope.

This glimmer of hope shined extra bright just a few weeks ago on November 9, when Berlin celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

The celebration included a colorful motion art installation, called Visions in Motion, comprised of 120,000 vibrant fabric ribbons in the open air. It was set up at the front of the Brandenburg gate in Berlin and it was breathtaking and absolutely larger than life. The installation, which was clearly the highlight of the day, was created by Patrick Shearn and his Poetic Kinetics team.

Poetic Kinetics is a Los Angeles-based team that specializes in large scale art installations and experiential design. Some of the installations they are famously known for are Escape Velocity, Solar Sunflowers and Caterpillar’s Longing.

The team and Shearn were approached by Kulturprojekte Berlin to work together on the installation. They wanted to create something that could move and would be a symbol of the German people coming together.

The ribbons had messages of greetings, wishes and hopes — perfectly envisioning their goal to symbolize the unification of the German people. The messages on the ribbons were written by the Germans themselves as well as people from all around the globe.

The surreal installation was pretty large, too — you can simply tell by the resources. 9,500 feet of rope was used for the installation, which also included over 1,250 hand-tied knots. That sure is a lot of knots to tie by hand!

The structure would visually create waves as gusts of wind flew by. The ribbons would majestically float around and when the wind was really strong, so was the wave — enough to bring people walking by to a halt. Many stopped to look and admire the massive piece of art, which went all along the walkway by the gate.

The installation was a part of a bigger event, too — Berlin Festival Week — which happened November 4th to 10th.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the festival week offered several events and exhibitions for locals and other supporters to participate in. All of the activities were sprawled across a number of historical locations and did a wonderful job commemorating the anniversary.

In one particularly heartwarming clip shared by Poetic Kinetics on Instagram, you can see people decorating their own personal ribbons to contribute to the installations — people both young and old. The ribbons were either pink, purple, blue or yellow, and many people wrote personal notes on them. One young boy is even seen adding stickers to his.

There is nothing better than watching a community of people come together, and this event in Berlin was particularly moving. There’s no better way to celebrate than with people, meaningful messages and beyond stunning artwork!
