According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1/3 of American adults are obese. And for some, it can be extremely difficult to lose the weight. If you’re in the midst of dieting, then here’s someone who may serve as an inspiration during the weak times.

Meet Elle Goodall.

Elle had a fast food addiction, and only a few short years ago, she weighed over 400 pounds! In fact, doctors told her that she wouldn’t live past 40-years-old if she maintained her eating habits.

She tells the Caters (via The Telegraph), “My addiction to Macca’s (McDonald’s) was completely out of hand. If I wasn’t eating the fried food, I was thinking about eating it.”

“I’d easily eat three large Big Mac meals plus an extra portion of fries. I couldn’t get enough of the oily texture.”

Although Elle knew she was a bigger woman, she wouldn’t get on scales, somehow trying to avoid the reality of her weight problem.

She tells Caters, “It was only when I caught the flu and had to see my GP that he convinced me to have a health check. I couldn’t believe it when the scales read 184 kgs (405 pounds) and my blood results revealed I had Type 2 diabetes. I knew then something had to change.”

Elle underwent gastric sleeve surgery, deciding to drop her beloved fast food and to hit the gym consistently. In the first 9 months following her surgery, she even competed in 3 triathlons!

Elle currently weighs 150 pounds and plans to eventually compete in the Cairns Ironman 70.3, a competition which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 42 km run.

She tells the Cairns Post, “I’m hoping to do my first full Ironman soon, at the beginning of next year, but I may have to complete a few more 70.3s before I go full— but we’ll see.”

“I’m pretty determined, and I feel like anything that I can set my mind to, I can do.”

Elle says that when she first started trying to lose weight, she didn’t have very much support.

She explains, “I had a lot of people, back in the beginning, who told me that I was crazy and I was not going to be able to do it. But I used that as fuel— that really fuelled me to get where I am today.”

“Now, I just want to prove to people that if you reach that point, there is something you can do, and you can save your own life.”
