Being out on the open ocean can be a thrill.

Many of us have probably enjoyed a peaceful day on a sailboat or a trip with our family on a luxury cruise. Though these experiences often consist of catching up some rays, staying below deck and maybe reading a book. Still, on days where the weather doesn’t work out, it can be a little choppy. On other days, it can be downright terrifying.

In a recent video on the internet, ocean weather turned bad.

The video was loaded online by Stephen J Burke.

Burke had been on a passenger on the Anthem of the Seas in February 2016, an ocean-liner operated by Royal Caribbean. Although these cruises are typically very relaxing and uneventful, the weather had picked up dramatically with winds up to 120 mph.

Needless to say, the waves hitting the ship were enormous—even on the third floor!

Though the passengers on the ship were ok, the ship itself sustained some significant damage.

Although the pictures were taken down off the internet for a time, many of them resurfaced—and the results were not pretty. Many rooms had downed chairs, tables knocked over and parts of the ceiling knocked loose.

As Burke’s own footage shows, the ship was being rocked pretty significantly from side to side.

In some places, the angle of the ship against the water was so steep that passengers had to walk down the hallways at a near 45 degree angle just to stay upright. Definitely not good news for anyone who may be prone to seasickness!

All the chaos at sea was the result of the ship coming into close contact with a hurricane.

The storm responsible was the Hermine, a winter storm system that the ship’s crew thought they would avoid. In addition to Burke’s posts, other passengers were also taking to the internet to document their experience:

Fortunately, all the passengers on the ship eventually made it home safe and sound.

The Anthem of the Sea is still sailing today, despite sustaining some minor damage along the way. Still, the passengers on that particular cruise had to cut some of their sight-seeing short to make a safe return home. Needless to say, the ocean can be a pretty scary place.
