When Marleen Brooks came home one day, she saw a strange letter.
After opening the note, she was thrilled to see that it was from an elderly lady that lived who lived on the opposite end of her street. The lady’s name was Wanda.
When Marleen Brooks read the letter, she was heartbroken.
The letter read:
“Would you consider to become my friend. I’m 90 years old- live alone. All my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared. Please I pray for someone.”
Wanda was so lonely because her son had passed away that she decided to reach out to Marleen. She wanted to be friends with her.
The next day, Marleen baked some cupcakes and knocked on her neighbor’s door so she could properly introduce herself. She was so glad she did because the two had a lovely evening getting learning about each others’ backgrounds.
Then, Marleen contacted Frank Somerville, an employee at KTVU News to tell him Wanda’s story and to update him on how their first night together went.
“She’s such a sweet lady, and she was over the moon when we came over,” she wrote.
“Wanda said – ‘I hope you didn’t think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do something. Thank you so much for coming over. I’ve lived here for 50 years and don’t know any of my neighbors,’ she continued.”
Wanda also told Marleen that she had three sons. Unfortunately, however, one of her sons tragically passed away and the other two did not live close by.
Given her advanced age, Wanda also told Marleen that she needs to be on oxygen. Wanda also suffers from congestive heart failure and osteoporosis, among other ailments.
Before Marleen left she made sure Wanda knew she could call her at any time and reassured her that she’d be back for a visit very soon.
“I’m sure Wanda and I will have some great times,” she wrote.
Since then, this beautiful story of friendship has been shared by hundreds of people on social media.
We just love this story.
It’s important to remember that not everyone has friends and family so it’s important we reach out to those people in our lives and let them know that we are there to help.
