A dog nicknamed ‘Freeway Frida’ has finally been rescued after spending five long weeks on a freeway median.

A German Shepherd was stranded for over a month on a highway median in the town of Galt in Northern California. Thankfully — the police department was able to rescue the poor dog before it was too late. But how did Freeway Frida end up in this predicament?

When drivers spotted the stranded dog weeks before her rescue, they alerted authorities to initiate a rescue. The police department tried to save the dog multiple times, but she would always seem to evade them.

Every time they attempted a rescue, the scared dog would disappear into the bushes or outrun them.

Thankfully — they persisted. After a difficult rescue, they were finally able to bring the confused and scared German Shepherd to safety. She had been fending for herself for weeks, and she was severely malnourished.

They transported the gorgeous dog to the VCA Bradshaw Animal Hospital in Elk Grove, California for evaluation. The veterinarian says that given the ordeal she just went through — she’s doing very well.

The veterinarian and rescuers assume that the German Shepherd must have found some sort of food to survive on during her time living on the median.

It had been raining on and off in the area recently, so they assume that she was able to find rain water to drink. They aren’t sure if she found garbage or little critters to eat for survival.

Dr. Mike Jones, the veterinarian, was very glad she was rescued because she needed an operation on a fractured leg that she’d be walking on for weeks. They say that the surgery went well and she’s behaving like a wonderful, normal, friendly dog.

The German Shepherd was scanned for a microchip, but unfortunately, she didn’t have one. They assume that someone must have dumped her there at some point, leaving her to fend for herself.

The officer that helped wrangle in the beautiful dog is named Sylvia Cuelho. She tried her best to track down the owner but never found any luck. She decided that if the owner didn’t come forward, she would adopt the dog.

“Of course you always want a dog to be reunited with its owner,” Coelho said. “But I’ve always hoped that I would be able to bring her home.”

The officer that rescued her has welcome Frida into her home, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
