Dogs are a human’s best friend and guardian angel all in one furry package.

When a family trip took a turn for the worst, their dog’s quick thinking may have saved the lives of two family members who were struck by lightning.

The family, who has chosen to stay anonymous due to the victims’ juvenile age, were on a camping trip for a family reunion up in the mountains of Beaver County, Utah.

On Friday morning of July 28th, two sisters, ages 8 and 16, decided to branch out from the family on their ATV and explore the area. They brought the family dog along for the ride. The pair didn’t go too far when they decided to take a break from the ATV to wander around the area.

After exploring a bit, terror hit them as the girls were walking back. They were both struck by a huge lightning streak.

The odds of being hit by lightning in the U.S. are 1 in 700,000 people in any one year, published by National Geographic. The odds may not have been in the girls’ favor but being rescued by their quick thinking family dog may have saved their lives.

The family dog immediately ran back to their campsite to alert the family members.

The pup led the relatives to the girls’ location. They were found on the ground unconscious and needed immediate medical attention.

“The girls were then transported by Life Flight from Beaver Valley Hospital to Primary Children’s Hospital. Upon leaving Beaver Hospital the 8-year-old was in critical condition and the 16-year-old was in serious, but stable condition,” disclosed by Beaver’s County Sheriff’s Office in a press release.
